October 18th was National Mammography Day, and to help spread awareness, we have partnered with Women’s Choice Award Founder Delia Passi, and Leslie Ferris Yerger, CEO and Founder of My Density Matters. Together, we are making it known that for up to 50% of women, mammography alone might not be enough to detect breast cancer. BCRuckus, founded by Sheila Ann Mikhail after her own missed breast cancer diagnosis, raises awareness about the limitations of mammography for women with dense breast tissue. We strive to educate women on breast density, promote supplemental imaging options, advocate for low-cost access to these services, and encourage improved screening guidelines for women at heightened risk of breast cancer. My Density Matters is on a mission to empower women to find out their breast density, learn their additional screening options, and take charge of their breast cancer screening. We envision a world where breast density no longer hinders the early detection of breast cancer. To access additional educational content about breast density, additional screening, and more, text “Check Your Chart” to 211-411. Learn more about breast density, stories from those affected by it, and what we can do to support change, listen to our podcast at?bcruckus.org. 关于我们
BC Ruckus was launched in response to our Executive Director Sheila Mikhail’s personal experience of having a breast cancer diagnosis that was missed by repeated mammograms due to her dense breast tissue. Sheila turned her painful experience into action by creating BC Ruckus. BC Ruckus seeks to increase awareness about issues pertaining to breast cancer screening and diagnosis. In particular, we seek to educate women about the importance of knowing their breast tissue density and the implications this may have on the reliability of mammography to detect tumors in dense tissue. We aim to inform women about supplemental imaging options that are able to distinguish tumors from dense breast tissue as well as to lead initiatives focused on policy changes that will make these supplemental imaging options available to women with dense breast tissue.

Jenna's healthcare team recognized that both cancer and dense breast tissue appear white on a mammogram, prompting them to take proactive measures to ensure her cancer was detected early while still treatable. To learn about breast density and any additional screening you may require, please text CHECK YOUR CHART to 211-411. This service is free, informative, and does not require account creation. Change is possible. Last January, I visited Dr. Richard Shannon, SVP and CMO of Duke University health system, to push for better breast cancer screening for women with dense breasts. I was disappointed in my care at Duke Cancer Center in which bilateral breast cancer consisting of two tumors measuring almost 3 cm each went undiagnosed repeatedly on 3-D mammograms. I was angry that my Duke primary care physician, like many North Carolina physicians, advised that 3-D digital breast tomosynthesis was adequate for my heterogeneously dense breasts. I wanted to ensure that other women who entrusted their care to Duke would not feel similarly betrayed. William Hawkins, former CEO of Medtronic and former member of the Board of Trustees for Duke Medical Center, Leslie Ferris Yerger of My Density Matters, and a substantial donor to Duke Cancer Center were in attendance. At that meeting, a list of commitments was provided by Dr. Shannon to improve breast cancer screening for women with dense breasts. I was skeptical that change would occur… But it has! Based on discussions with Dr. Shannon, Duke has done the following 1. Rolled out an education program to over 200 primary care physicians on the shortcomings of mammograms for breast cancer screenings for women with dense breasts and the need for supplemental screening (preferably a breast MRI or alternatively, an ultrasound). 2. Changed medical practices so that with women with heterogeneously dense breasts will be advised to get additional screening and women with extremely dense breasts will be referred to get the supplemental screening. Please note that insurance may not pay for the additional screening. This is something that I have been working with many others to change both in North Carolina and nationally (Find It Early Act) 3. Established a program where women will be able to have a 15 minute consultation with a radiologist to review their mammograms. After my misdiagnoses, I was committed to improve breast cancer screening for other women, especially younger women and minority women, who tend to have dense breasts. I am extremely encouraged by the commitment of Dr. Shannon and others at Duke to improve the outcomes of women who trust their care to them. We do not have to be silent victims . . . But can use our experiences to benefit others. #breastcancerscreening #breastcancer #womenshealth #healthequity #mammography #densebreasts

And yet we persist! #breastcancerearlydetectioncoalition
For the first week of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I sat down with?Sen. Amy Klobuchar?— who, like me, delayed a mammogram because of the pandemic and was later diagnosed with breast cancer. We talked about the Find It Early Act, a bill I've been working on that would require states to cover additional screenings for the millions of women with dense breasts. She got real about why this legislation is so needed, the obstacles to passing it, and how she's doing after her treatment —?give it a watch right here ?? https://lnkd.in/e72_mSNm ??: Getty

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Doctors have known for a long time that 3D tomosynthesis does not work well in 40-50% of patients. So why aren’t more women referred for supplemental screening? Many doctors are not knowledgeable. I encountered that even my doctors were at top institutions like University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University Medical Center. In many states, like North Carolina, insurance will not cover the additional tests. So many doctors don’t offer them or women can’t pay for them even if they manage to get the referral. More fundamentally, why is the burden placed on women to request these tests? Women are not seeking a mammogram, per se. They want breast cancer screening. If a mammogram is not the right tool for their breast type, then they should be able to depend on their doctors to order the right diagnostic. It’s time for the healthcare system to take women’s health seriously. #breastcancer #breastcancerscreening #equitableaccess

?? THIS IS IMPORTANT ?? The Find it Early Act Will save lives! ??
Molecular Breast Imaging has been included in the Find it Early Act, introduced by Senators Klobuchar and Marshall to ensure all health insurance plans cover screening and diagnostic breast imaging for women with dense breasts or at high risk for breast cancer. 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and 71% of those cases occur in women with dense breasts. Unfortunately, they may have to pay out of pocket because dense breast imaging is not always covered with no out-of-pocket costs. SNMMI has successfully advocated for the inclusion of Molecular Breast Imaging as a covered screening option in this bill and will continue to monitor progress and keep members informed re: calls to action.
