We had a great crew in our Every-Day-Ergonomics space at the 2025 STEM Girl Day at UT in Austin.?(I know some Aggies will hammer me for this, yeah, I know its t.u. but non-Aggies won’t get it). ?? We had three board certified professional ergonomists, one associate ergonomist, one PhD, four current grad students, two certified safety professional, one professional engineer. I read today that over 10,000 had signed up to attend and 12,000 were possible (plus over 5000 parents, plus siblings).?We know the count was down slightly due to morning temps below freezing and the whole event was moved indoors due to drizzly cold rain.?Nevertheless, we had a steady stream of K through 8th graders.?I saw some older kids and lots of interested parents and siblings.??? Our demos included an articulating shoulder/arm that showed kids how force increases as load moves away from the shoulder.?Morgan had an 8 pound weight to demonstrate head weight and talked about text neck (and its associated neck and shoulder pain). ?? Kaysey ran a demo teaching kids that various obstructions make it hard to perform hand assembly tasks (kids love hands on stuff).??? ?? ?? We had the anthropometry demo up on the wall showing various height people (girls could have a picture taken with a US astronaut Nancy Currie-Gregg or US Olympian Ariana Ince) and 6’5” W. Gary Allread; ?plus we got to talk about designing for various human sizes – all cool stuff! Aggie Grad Student volunteers had a color coded stick to demonstrate “Power Zone” {working smarter not harder} Matt drew kids in to our space and explained “What is Ergonomics” Year #2 – it was fun!?We got to engage with more kids than we can count.?Hopefully some felt encouraged that they can pursue a STEM path (and I’d like to think that maybe we planted a few seeds for a future generation of ergonomist).? Now I want to thank everyone that volunteered their time and what felt like limitless energy to make our Every-Day-Ergonomics Demo a success. HUMAN FACTORS: TAKING LIFE'S MESS IN ITS STRIDE Life can be messy (literally and figuratively) because it's unpredictable, full of complexity - and stuff just happens. Despite our best efforts to plan, things often take unexpected turns. Relationships change, goals evolve and challenges arise. But messiness can change things for the better. Mistakes teach lessons, setbacks build resilience and detours lead to discoveries we might never have imagined. Human factors focuses on how people interact with each other, their environments, tools and technologies, often in ways we don't expect. Human factors embraces life's complexities, leading to better outcomes. Human factors professionals understand and design systems that accommodate the unpredictability of life and the complexity of human behaviour. They help to create systems that are intuitive, efficient and forgiving of messiness. They recognise that people are imperfect and variable, and they design solutions that support real-world unpredictability.
