That spending is divided into two major categories: non-discretionary spending, i.e., necessities like food, medicine, housing, and clothing, and discretionary spending, which includes all non-essential goods and services. Economic factors such as inflation, which drives up prices, and seasonal events like the holidays when we see deep retail discounts can significantly impact spending. What Americans buy and what percentage of their purchases are spent on non-essentials reflects their interests, habits, and vices. So here's the question: where did your money go this year?
