Happy International Education Week from Ecuador! ???? #IEW2024 I had the pleasure of participating in the peer review process for Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, after over 2 years serving as their advisor in the American Council on Education Internationalization Lab. Congratulations to Daniel álvarez Cadena and his team for the successful completion of this process. Unach has been an example of dedication and commitment from the university leadership. With the sponsorship of the U.S. Embassy and Consulate in Quito, the convening power of the Red Ecuatoriana de Internacionalización de la Educación Superior (REIES), the generous hospitality of Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja, and the ACE Futures Lab leadership, R. McKenna Brown, Erin Baldwin and I are delivering a workshop on strategic planning for internationalization. Thanks to Juan Ignacio Burneo, Maria Veronica Pe?a Seminario, Ana Stefanía Bravo Mu?oz, and to everyone who is making this event possible. We have broad representation of universities and higher education institutions from across the country. It was an honor, and an example, to have the participation of Ecuadorian authorities, including Senescyt Ecuador, Consejo de Aseguramiento de la Calidad de la Educación Superior - CACES and CES.

It's #IEW2024 and you might say: “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...” Like Dickens' classic ?? ???????? ???? ?????? ????????????, two new reports reveal contradictory realities. Like Dickens' London, the 2024 Open Doors report from the Institute of International Education (https://lnkd.in/e8ckzwgK) tells a tale of triumph and resilience, while... ...like Dickens’ Paris, the Global Enrolment Benchmark Report (https://lnkd.in/eGXQKm8D) from NAFSA: Association of International Educators and Studyportals surfaces critical vulnerabilities beneath the headline numbers. In this article, I discuss the complex realities of international student mobility, comparing and contrasting data from both reports related to: ?? Geographic Concentration and the Challenge of Diversification ?? Graduate Growth and the Employment-Driven Future ?? Aggregate Economic Benefits but Growing Accessibility Barriers ?? Visa Barriers and the Fragility of Exchange ?? Looming Immigration Overhaul in the Trump 2.0 Era I end with a prescient question posed by Rajika Bhandari over a decade ago: "An international education for what and for whose benefit?" Our answer to this question has more urgency than ever. Read my full analysis and share your thoughts on what these trends in student mobility mean for the future of international education. #InternationalEducation #StudentMobility #GlobalMobility #OpenDoorsReport #HigherEd #intled #intlstudent

?? Cracking the Code: Reimagining the Role of Higher Education Beyond Traditional Boundaries in Brazilian Universities. ???? Brazil's higher education institutions face significant challenges in integrating teaching, research, and community engagement ("inseparability") as mandated by its 1988 constitution. A recent article in #IHE explores this. Key Findings: ?? Constitutional mandate requires integrating teaching, research, and community extension ?? Only 29% of public institutions have fully implemented cross-mission integration ?? Community engagement transforms academic learning through dialogical knowledge exchange ?? Lessons here resonate beyond Brazil, offering valuable insights for global higher education reform. ?? Had a thought-provoking time interacting with the attendees at my seminar hosted by the Center for International Higher Education. Great questions, great conversations, looking forward to more conversations in future! Many thanks to Chris Glass for capturing this moment and giving the best introduction I've ever had. Heartfelt gratitude also goes out to Rebecca Schendel and Gerardo Blanco for their warm hospitality (in cold Boston).
