This Pepsi stunt is funny — but?it’s also using SERIOUS BRAIN SCIENCE to drive sales. To explain how, let’s first look at the ad. “Pizza tastes better when chased by a Pepsi,” the ad says —?so Pepsi did that literally, by having Pepsi drivers chase (real-looking, but probably fake) pizza delivery guys around town. It’s funny! But here’s what’s REALLY happening: Scientists call it “classical conditioning.” When we experience two unrelated things together,?our brains connect them. Eventually we make a mental shortcut: Seeing one (pizza) evokes the other (Pepsi). Pepsi is smart to associate with pizza. Soda sales are slumping, but pizza is always positive. This gives people a REASON to think of Pepsi. Similarly: Corona wants you to associate it with the beach. Oreo wants you to associate it with milk. Want to stay top of mind?
