A huge thank you to the team at #SXSW and all those who joined myself and Rebecca Glashow this weekend as we discussed ‘The Bluey Effect’ and how we build and nurture our brands and their communities across the globe. From Bluey to Doctor Who, the teams at BBC Studios power evergreen global franchises, and it was wonderful to take a step back and reflect on the success of our teams’ ambitious strategies across everything from content distribution, to building out our commercial offering and the importance of experiential events and pop culture moments. Of course none of this would be possible without the vision of Joe Brumm and our partners at Ludo Studio Studio, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Corporation (ABC) and The Walt Disney Company. I also had the chance to sit down with Evan Shapīro to discuss our brand-first social strategy and enjoy a Sunday Roast with UK Advertising in the Austin sunshine with our creator team and brilliant comedy talent Amy Gledhill. Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell’s moving waltz to You’ll Never Walk Alone captured the judges and nations hearts and earned the couple a perfect score of 40 when they performed it again in the final.??? The dance features an iconic segment where Chris, who made history as the first ever blind celebrity contestant and Strictly winner, moved flawlessly across the dance floor on his own.??? ? This weekend at #SXSW, Nicki Sheard and I sat down for a conversation about all things brand-building and fan engagement at BBC Studios. From Doctor Who to Bluey, BBC Studios has a deep heritage creating and nurturing IP and global brands. Bluey’s success speaks for itself – but that success doesn’t happen overnight nor without intentionality, strategic coordination and creative vision across BBC Studios, Joe Brumm and the Bluey team at Ludo Studio, and our global partners Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and The Walt Disney Company. It truly takes a village to create an engaged fan community around the world, and a big part of that is working with the right partners to meet content-hungry audiences where they are. Being both nimble and ambitious has allowed us to meet the fans’ wants across all areas of the business – from building audiences on YouTube and TikTok with dedicated channels to launching immersive in-person experiences with CAMP across the US to Bluey’s upcoming big-screen debut with Disney, we’ve raised the bar year after year to deliver for the global fan community. With Doctor Who, we have an iconic brand that has found fans across multiple generations over the span of 60+ years. Doctor Who’s longevity is a testament to our commitment to super-serve loyal fans while also inviting new viewers to join the community. Our global co-production partnership with Disney has allowed us to introduce Doctor Who to brand-new audiences and we can’t wait for season two to debut next month. Andrew Cohen Head of BBC Studios Science Unit showcased the long-awaited re-imagining of Walking With Dinosaurs. ?? kate ward, Managing Director for Factual hosted a special conversation with adventurer, author, and television presenter Simon Reeve. ?? Some of the stars from our rich catalogue of unscripted content joined us for an entertaining in-conversation, including Essex’s finest Pete Wicks and Rylan, as well as Great Bake Off legend Prue Leith. ?? An exclusive preview of radical reality dating experimental format, The Honesty Box (Created by our invested indie Mettlemouse Entertainment for Channel 4). ?? A fireside chat with Kate O’Riordan, the creator and writer of scripted formats Smother and Blackshore. ?? With new licenses announced and fresh formats presented to valued clients, it’s been an exciting week for BBC Studios Global Entertainment at our annual content and customer event, Showcase. ? The room was full for an exclusive preview of radical reality dating experiment, The Honesty Box where the audience also heard what makes this format stand out from the crowd from creators, Sarah Tyekiff and shaun parry?of our invested indie Mettlemouse Entertainment, and Channel 4’s Steve Handley?and Genna Gibson. ? Our unrivalled collection of family-led drama and comedy formats were presented to Scripted Formats clients reinforcing us as one of the top scripted distributors in the industry. The session included a fireside chat with Kate O’Riordan, the creator and writer of Blackshore and we were thrilled to be able to announce the first international format licence for the award-winning drama Smother, also written by O’Riordan. The gripping drama format has been acquired by Slovakia’s TV Markíza and VOYO. ? This is the second scripted BBC Studios format that TV Markíza has adapted in recent years with the other being Doctor Foster. The most adapted scripted format of the decade continues to go from strength to strength and today we also announced that the popular drama will be getting a Czech remake after a license agreement was struck with TV Nova and Voyo. ? Earlier today, presenter Emma Willis hosted a session in conversation with some of the stars of our rich catalogue of unscripted content. Rylan (Rob and Rylan’s Passage to India by Zinc Media Group: Rex TV) Prue Leith (The Great British / American / Celebrity Bake Off by Love Productions) and Pete Wicks (Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake by BBC Studios Entertainment Productions) joined Emma on stage to highlight the success of their shows amongst other exciting new titles in our portfolio such as Alison Hammond’s Big Weekend (BBC Studios Entertainment Productions), Big Zuu & AJ Tracey’s Rich Flavours (BBC Studios Entertainment Productions) The First Class Travel Show (HoneyBee and Group M Motion Entertainment) and Amanda and Alan’s Spanish Job (VOLTAGE TV PRODUCTIONS LIMITED). ? EastEnders is going interactive for the first time ever and it will be live!???? ? That’s right, as part of the soap’s 40th birthday celebrations, viewers will have the chance to vote for the outcome of a?love triangle?storyline?and watch the results be revealed in a special live anniversary episode.? ? ?? EastEnders has a strong track record of pushing creative boundaries. Our drama production team first took it live back in 2010 for its 25th anniversary, where it was revealed that Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) killed Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb). The soap then went even further for its 30th anniversary in 2015, with a set of five episodes that all included live elements as the Who Killed Lucy Beale whodunit was revealed. ?? ???Chris Clenshaw, Executive Producer says, “We have been planning this week for a long time to ensure it’s full of drama and surprises…it’ll be extremely exciting to see which way the audience choose to take the story! I can promise that it will be unmissable, full of shocking twists that will change Albert Square, and the lives of those who live in it, forever.” ?Pulling off a live episode of drama is high octane! With actors moving between locations, one-shot takes, and the unpredictability of live TV, the stakes are high. But that’s what makes it thrilling for the production team, actors and for the audience! ??The vote will officially open at 8.30pm on Wednesday 19 February at?bbc.co.uk/eastenders, and will close at 7.10pm on Thursday 20 February so the result can be incorporated into the live episode which will broadcast at 7.30pm from BBC Elstree Centre that evening.? ?
