Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We accomplish our mission by partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers and others in the community, and we hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program achieving: - Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships; - Avoidance of risky behaviors; and - Educational success. Big Brothers Big Sisters helps vulnerable children break negative odds. Our professionally supported volunteer services are proven to reduce children’s risk of dropping out of school, becoming violent, using drugs and alcohol, and falling victim to other negative cycles. We recognize the hardship, pain, and challenges that children experience in too many of our communities. Our movement is relevant and there’s an urgent demand for what we achieve. Serving 13 counties in Northeast Indiana and South Central Michigan, we serve more than 1,800 annually. Our vision is to provide a caring adult mentor to every child in need across 13 counties in Indiana and Michigan. Our headquarters are in Fort Wayne, Indiana. We have hundreds of "matches" between caring, responsible adults and at-risk children throughout the 13 counties, and more than 80 program sites where we partner with local schools. This year we look to serve 2,000 area children.

In this season of thankfulness, we'd like to thank one of our longtime volunteers! Now 96 years old, Big Brother Buford had devoted 45 years of his life to serving and bettering children's lives, not just through Big Brothers Big Sisters but everywhere in the community. Stopping only 5 years ago, he reflects on his time in the program and motivation to join. Now, he's even gotten his niece to become a Big Sister! Meet Big Brother Travis and Little Brother Blayne who have been matched 1 year! Travis and Blayne first met through School Buddies, but recently, they decided they wanted to start a new adventure! Now, Travis and Blayne are Community-Based Big and Little Brothers, and they can’t wait to begin. The sweet and quiet Blayne likes being outside whenever possible, always ready to explore the zoo, Jungle George’s, or play basketball. Travis, always thoughtful and a little bit goofy, loves gardening, music, and board games. These are some of Blayne’s favorite activities too, and the two warmed up to each other right away. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this new Community-Based pair!

Tuesday night I attended the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana BIG Celebration. We learned about the impact BBBS is having in our area. Met an amazing Big and Little who have been paired for a decade. And heard from some of the amazing people behind the scenes who help make it all possible. Bonus: my Little and I got to walk in the fashion show! BBBS continues to do great things in our community, and I’m so grateful to be a small part of that. Meet Big Sister Angela and Little Sister Diama who have been matched for almost 2 years now! Why do Diama and Angela enjoy their match so much? For Diama, it’s going to do new and exciting stuff with her Big. For Angela, it’s getting to do things with her Little that she normally wouldn’t do! Perfectly matched, these two peas in a pod have had a ton of fun with card game nights, going skating, and even going to the Taylor Swift movie! Even better, they found they both like the color pink! We can’t wait to see what this duo does next!
