What do you do if you're afraid to network in the industry?

Attending events without a clear objective is a big mistake. That happened during my first couple of big conferences, where I was just floating around, which led to scattered conversations and zero results. A game-changer was setting specific goals before each conference. Having a target in mind focused my energy and helped me choose the right people and events. It also sharpened my message. Introductions transformed from generic to impactful, highlighting my value and genuine interest. Networking became laser-focused and dramatically more productive.

Networking is about getting to know people before you need something from them, not when you need something. So, reach out to a mix of people, particularly online, and connect. Then, when it comes to an event, there will be people who you're already somewhat familiar with. Your goal should be breath and depth of contacts, rather than gaining anything from them to start.

Networking is key to adding value and, in my case, generating new business. You need to value the diversity it brings to your personal perspective on what you do. Conference organisers can make it easier for everyone by giving people space and time to chat in groups during a presentation, or scheduling specific time for ‘elevator pitch’ speed dating-type networking sessions. Make sure you can talk about the essence of what you do and your passion for it in 1-2 minutes then go for it. Most people are a bit shy - it’s not just you who feels like that.

Tell yourself that you can do what you are afraid of, that it is never as hard or as bad as it seems. That if others can do it, and have done it, you can too. Everyone is networking all the time - you're probably already doing it and not realizing it! We all have strengths and needs; networking is about leveraging yours to match another's.

Before jumping into any industry - we need to understand its market, game-players and specifics. So, it is worth studying a lot and talking to different people before to see if this is worth a try or this is not a good idea at all.

Being apprehensive about networking in any industry is understandable, but to overcome this one can start small by building an online presence. Joining relevant online communities (LinkedIn groups, discussion boards) and engaging by commenting, asking questions, and sharing your work always help. As one becomes more comfortable online, actively building connections, or expressing interest in the experience of admired professionals will add further value and build confidence.

Being prepared is the easiest way to release the fear and anxiety that networking causes for some. This can be writing down a list of questions you want to ask or doing a little research to find commonalities of the people you will meet. The more times you do this, the easier it gets. As it gets easier, it will also become more natural!

Practice self-compassion. Remember it's ok to feel nervous about networking. Be kind to yourself and practice self-compassion if things don't go as planned. Treat networking as a learning experience and focus on the progress you're making rather than perfection.
