Today is Black Balloon Day. For over 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with individuals in recovery—listening to their stories, witnessing their struggles, and celebrating their victories. I’ve seen lives rebuilt, families reunited, and hope restored. But I’ve also seen the devastation that addiction leaves behind. Jennifer, who refused to let isolation during COVID stop her from attending AA meetings. Jesse, whose high school prom and graduation were stolen by yet another drug possession charge and jail time. Mike, a grieving father carrying the unbearable weight of regret after losing his son to an overdose—never even knowing he was using. Today, we are given a chance to remember. As March is Women’s History month I have taken a moment to reflect about how being a woman in the mental health industry has been both a challenge and a blessing. The challenge? ? Being underestimated, especially in leadership. I’ve had to push harder, speak louder, and take up space with intention. ? Having to prove my expertise in rooms where my male counterparts were assumed competent by default. For example, not being allowed to lead an Anger Management group for men because of my gender despite my experience and expertise on the topic. The blessing? ? The natural ability to lead with both empathy and strength. ? The way clients naturally take to my nurturing side. ? The privilege of mentoring other women in the field. Ultimately, I am grateful for these moments, as they helped give me the experience I needed to build BaysideCEU into the thriving continuing education platform it is today. Lastly, the mental health and education fields are built on care, insight, and understanding. So long as we continue to have women who refuse to shrink (no pun intended), we will move closer to a world where the way we recognize and respect professionals will never be by gender.
