关于我们
For over 55 years, we’ve been Houston's longest-running and most trusted environmental conservation nonprofit. Our mission is to celebrate, protect and restore the natural richness of all our bayous and streams. At Bayou Preservation Association, our vision is a network of healthy bayous, streams and watersheds. Through a science-based approach to policies and actions, community collaboration, and a commitment to safe and clean water, we're working to transform our city into a region acknowledged nationally for its high quality of life. Our Mission: Celebrate, Protect, Restore Covering over 2,500 miles, Houston's bayous are not just beautiful but also provide essential flood protection and public health benefits. We embrace a collaborative approach, uniting community partners, policymakers, and local governments to enhance the health of our bayous and our Lower Galveston Bay watershed. Balancing Growth & Preservation In a rapidly growing urban environment like Houston, addressing environmental issues is urgent. We advocate for nature-based solutions to harmonize growth and preservation while ensuring equitable access for all within the Lower Galveston Bay watershed. Through implementation of the Coastal Public Lands Management Act, the Galveston Bay Estuary Plan, and The City of Houston Climate Action Plan, we create programs that celebrate, protect, and restore the richness of our waterways. Promoting Resilience Through Nature Our work extends to advocating for urban development that seamlessly integrates nature-based solutions. This approach promotes regional resilience, monitors water quality in collaboration with local authorities, and develops educational resources for communities and stewards. We unite scientists, engineers, educators, advocates, and resident stewards to Celebrate, Protect, and Restore (CPR) Houston’s bayous.

We sincerely thank the Maverick Water Group for their dedication to adopting 3 local storm drains through the Reclaim the Drain program! This initiative encourages residents to get involved in local water management by adopting a storm drain and utilizing the Reclaim the Drain kit for maintenance. By participating, they contribute to minimizing pollutants that enter our bayous and waterways, leading to cleaner water and helping prevent flooding through efficient drainage back into Galveston Bay. If you or your organization would like to make a difference in your community by adopting storm drains in your area and receiving a Reclaim the Drain kit, please reach out to us at [email protected]. #ReclaimtheDrain

On Friday, February 28th, our President & CEO,?Brittani Flowers, MUEP, took the stage at the State of African American Health Power Summit '25, hosted by the African American Health Coalition and held at the United Way of Greater Houston.?This significant event brought together health professionals, community leaders, and advocates to address the?systemic inequalities impacting the health and well-being of Black communities. As a panelist on the?Environmental Health Panel, Brittani contributed to a significant conversation about the direct link between?environmental conditions and public health—especially in underserved communities experiencing higher rates of pollution, urban flooding, and limited access to safe outdoor spaces. The discussion focused on?actionable solutions?to promote healthier environments. At Bayou Preservation , we are dedicated to?promoting cleaner, healthier bayous?and?equipping communities with the knowledge and resources?needed to foster lasting change. ??Thank You for Making a Difference at the Shady Lane Park Clean-Up!?? Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Community Park Clean-Up at Shady Lane Park last Saturday! Even in chilly conditions, 14 volunteers, along with BPA board member Graham Knopp, dedicated their time to collecting trash and debris to enhance the safety and cleanliness of our green spaces and waterways. Together, we removed 76 tires and nearly 4,000 pounds of trash—an incredible collective effort! We are extremely grateful to the Greater Northside Management District’s HOT team for their invaluable help with three trailers full of trash and to the Klein Forest High School Interact Club for their enthusiastic involvement. We sincerely appreciate our fantastic partners— Harris County Flood Control District, Greater Northside Management District, Houston ToolBank for the supplies, and City Acre Brewing for offering discounted food and drinks to all participants! This event wasn’t just about cleaning up; it was a call to action for environmental stewardship and flood safety. We promoted our Reclaim the Drain program, encouraging the adoption of storm drains while highlighting how blocked drains negatively impact Houston's bayous and infrastructure. We distributed two Reclaim the Drain Kits, empowering participants to enhance our city and watersheds through drain adoption and community action. Let’s keep working together for a cleaner and safer Houston!

The Targeted Bacteria Monitoring Project, launched in 2019, aims to combat bacteria pollution in the Houston-Galveston area through focused monitoring efforts. Bayou Preservation has collaborated with Student Conservation Association (SCA) interns on this initiative, which targets high-priority areas, particularly Sim’s Bayou, one of Texas' most polluted waterways. Funded by the Galveston Bay Estuary Program (GBEP), the project identifies sources that contribute excessive pollutants above the allowable limits, often resulting from issues like sewer overflows and failing infrastructure. Once these sources are pinpointed, local authorities can take action to address the problems, making the process both efficient and impactful. Learn more about the project and its findings in the?Back the Bay?article, and stay updated through our newsletter! https://lnkd.in/gQfiT43v #BacteriaMonitoring #BayouPreservation #SCA#GalvestonBay
