  • Operating Room Week (November 10-16) honors the vital contributions of nurses who care for patients before, during, and after surgery. Carly Ling, RN, has dedicated 8 ? years to working as an OR Circulator, with nearly all of those years spent at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Frisco. Inspired by her mother, who had been a nurse for 47 years, Carly always knew she wanted to help people. Her mother's 20-year career as an OR Circulator at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas profoundly influenced Carly’s path into perioperative nursing. As an OR Circulator, Carly starts her day early by checking the surgical schedule and preparing her room with the necessary equipment, medications, and supplies. Her responsibilities span from assisting anesthesia with intubation and positioning patients to ensuring the sterile field and gathering additional materials during surgery. Carly is always aware of the patient's needs, the sterile field, and the ongoing surgery, balancing multiple priorities to support the patient and the surgical team. The most rewarding part of Carly’s job is knowing her work helps improve patients’ lives. Whether it's the appreciation from patients and their families or the gratitude from her colleagues and physicians, Carly finds deep fulfillment in the positive impact she makes. One memorable experience for Carly was when a national shortage of ear tubes threatened to delay countless surgeries for patients suffering from chronic ear infections. Through persistent effort and collaboration with the materials management team, Carly was able to source the tubes from a manufacturer in New Zealand, ensuring that surgeries could proceed without delay—a moment that highlighted the behind-the-scenes dedication she brings to her role. Collaboration and communication with surgeons, scrub techs, and anesthesiologists are key to Carly’s success. Her ability to stay calm in high-pressure situations stems from taking a deep breath, trusting her training, and working as a team to ensure patient safety. Critical thinking, teamwork, and flexibility are essential skills in the OR, as the role of an OR Circulator often involves multitasking and prioritizing in fast-paced, high-stakes environments. One misconception about OR Circulator Nurses is that their role is easy since they typically care for one patient at a time. In reality, Carly explains, a lot happens behind the scenes before, during, and after each procedure. Constant multitasking and prioritizing are required to ensure the surgery runs smoothly. What Carly enjoys most about her work at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center—Frisco is the strong bond she shares with her colleagues. Their willingness to help one another creates a supportive environment, making each challenging day more manageable. When it’s time to unwind, Carly loves spending time with her husband and two amazing children, a perfect way to recharge after a busy day in the operating room.

  • It’s Operating Room Week! For over six years, Brenda Alvarenga has been an essential part of the Operating Room (OR) team. Originally from El Salvador, she moved to the U.S. and began her journey in healthcare as an OR Environmental Services (EVS) Tech at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Frisco. This has been her first place of work since moving to the United States, and she’s embraced the role with pride and dedication. As an OR EVS Tech, Brenda’s typical day revolves around ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the operating rooms. She meticulously cleans and disinfects surgical rooms, equipment, and common areas, adhering to strict infection control protocols. Effective communication and teamwork are crucial to her work, as she coordinates with surgeons, nurses, and other staff to ensure smooth transitions during busy surgical schedules. Her responsibilities extend beyond cleaning, including pre-operative preparation, post-surgery deep cleaning, restocking essential supplies, and ensuring that equipment is in working order. Brenda knows the importance of attention to detail, as the cleanliness of the OR directly impacts patient safety. She also emphasizes the significance of high-touch areas like surgical lights, tables, and controls, which require extra care to eliminate potential biological hazards. Brenda’s passion for her work shines through in her commitment to patient safety. She believes that every surgery presents an opportunity to make a positive impact. Ensuring that each OR is sanitized to the highest standards allows her to contribute to the health and well-being of every patient. One of Brenda's biggest challenges is managing her work's fast-paced, time-sensitive nature, especially when there are back-to-back surgeries. Her secret to handling this pressure is effective time management—taking control of time rather than letting time control her. Staying organized is crucial for her workload and the entire OR team, as any delays or missteps could have ripple effects on patient care. Brenda credits her success to critical skills such as attention to detail, communication, adaptability, and a deep understanding of sanitation and infection control protocols. She also stresses the importance of teamwork, as collaboration with her colleagues allows for smooth workflows and seamless patient care transitions. When she’s not maintaining the OR environment, Brenda enjoys unwinding by embracing her passion for nature and travel. With a background in Tourism Business Administration, she loves to explore different parts of the world during her vacations. Additionally, she finds peace through meditation, listening to relaxing music, and spending time with loved ones, ensuring she takes care of herself physically and mentally. We are proud to have you on our team, Brenda!

  • Peri-Operative Nurses Week, celebrated from November 10-16, is a time to recognize and honor perioperative nurses' vital role in ensuring safe and successful surgeries. These dedicated professionals are the backbone of patient care before and after surgery, closely monitoring patients, managing complex tasks, and providing comfort and reassurance in some of the most critical moments of healthcare. Their expertise and compassion significantly impact patient recovery and well-being, and this week is an opportunity to celebrate their commitment to excellence. With four years of experience as a nurse, Kwmaine Smith has found his calling as a PACU Charge Nurse. Kwmaine oversees daily operations, manages patient care coordination, supervises staff, and ensures effective communication among the team. His role is critical in providing seamless post-surgical care for patients recovering from anesthesia. What drew Kwmaine to perioperative nursing was the opportunity to make a significant impact during a critical moment in a patient’s recovery. The PACU environment allows him to closely monitor patients during their most vulnerable time—right after surgery—where his skills in managing pain, stabilizing vital signs and offering reassurance play a crucial role in their recovery. A memorable experience for Kwmaine was when he noticed a patient in the unit showing signs of a heart attack. His quick thinking and keen observation skills allowed him to act swiftly and play a vital role in the patient’s care, making a significant difference in their outcome. One of the biggest challenges Kwmaine faces is the intensity and pace of the PACU. However, he overcomes these challenges by using all available resources and relying on his team to ensure patient care is never compromised. He is also dedicated to keeping patients informed, always explaining his steps to help them feel comfortable and less anxious before surgery. In postoperative care, Kwmaine ensures that patients are safely monitored, staffs the unit according to each patient’s acuity, and adjusts care plans as needed. Behind the scenes, perioperative nurses like Kwmaine work in a fast-paced environment, but the sense of accomplishment when patients recover well makes it all worthwhile. After a busy day in the PACU, Kwmaine finds balance by spending quality time with his wife and children, which helps him unwind and recharge for the next day of patient care. Thank you, Kwmaine!?

  • For the past 15 years, Christy Crook has been a vital part of the Medical Staff Services team at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Frisco. Her role is crucial to ensuring that the hospital maintains the highest standards of care by meticulously overseeing the credentialing process. What is Medical Staff Services? Medical Staff Services ensures that healthcare providers are fully qualified to care for patients. Through detailed credentialing—verifying education, experience, and qualifications—Christy and the team ensure that the hospital is staffed with the most qualified professionals, directly impacting patient safety and care quality. In her role, Christy is responsible for assessing, verifying, and validating a provider’s credentials. This includes analyzing initial and reappointment applications to ensure they meet strict accreditation and regulatory standards. Her work ensures that providers are qualified and competent, with up-to-date privileges visible to the hospital staff, preventing any delays in patient care. A typical day for Christy involves working on applicant and reappointment files, verifying medical licensure, DEA, and malpractice records, making name badges for medical staff, and keeping them informed about their application status. What she finds most fulfilling is knowing that Baylor Frisco is committed to having the best of the best on staff. One of the biggest challenges in her role is avoiding burnout and the routine of “robot mode.” To stay focused, Christy works on special projects for her department and others, such as creating reports and spreadsheets, which helps to reset her focus. One memorable experience for Christy was the infamous story of Dr. Death, which reinforced the importance of vigilance in the credentialing process. It highlighted the need to watch for red flags, like mediocre peer references or brief hospital affiliations, to protect patient safety. While the work's importance may only sometimes be fully recognized, Christy knows that attention to detail in credentialing is essential for maintaining high-quality patient care. After a busy day, Christy enjoys unwinding with her three pups and driving around the lake with her husband to enjoy the wildlife and fishing. Thank you, Christy, for your hard work and dedication!
