All members of the group are board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and have completed fellowship training in the medical and surgical care of retinal diseases. All BARA surgeons have expertise in the treatment of common diseases such as AMD, diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachment, as well as rare diseases. We have served the Bay Area community for 35 years.

Can #ozempic and similar drugs increase the risk of #vision threatening disease in patients with #diabetes? #ozempic #victoza #Rybelsus etc. are all glucagon like peptide agonists (GLP-1 agonists) and are blockbuster drugs changing how we treat many conditions such as #diabetes, #heartdisease, #obesity, #sleepapnea. Many #diabetes #doctors ask or wonder if this type of drug can make #diabetes in the #retina worse and are concerned about GLP-1 agonists and the eye. Proud to be a (minor) part of the first study to provide some data on the topic. Led by the amazing Drs. Karen Wai, Prithvi Mruthyunjaya, MD,MHS, and @ehsanrahimy, we found an increased association of #vision threatening #diabeticretinopathy (both proliferative disease and macular edema) when comparing patients across the United States with GLP-1 agonists vs. those on SGLT2 inhibitors (ie #Jardiance and #Farxiga). Stanford University School of Medicine Does this association mean we should stop or avoid GLP-1 agonists? No, not necessarily! #Diabetes #doctors (#internalmedicine, #familymedicine, and #endocrinology etc) need to do what their experience and the data indicate to improve blood sugar, #hemoglobinA1c, and other measures for the whole body (#heart, #brain, # #kidneys, #eyes etc) but need to be vigilant and ensure their patients on GLP-1 agonists are monitored even more closely for vision threatening #eye disease, and data shows that severe vision loss from diabetes is almost completely preventable with existing treatments of retinal laser and injections.
