Earlier this week, Bay Area K-16 Collaborative members attended Chabot College’s "Vision 2030: Success with Equity" Dual Enrollment Convening. The powerful event featured a panel of unified school district superintendents on what it truly means to center equity in dual enrollment access, support and success. Panelists included: Jamal A. Cooks, Parvin Ahmadi, Jason Reimann, John Thompson, Daryl Camp, and Sonal Patel. The afternoon consisted of workshops facilitated by Career Ladders Project project to dive deeper into strategizing for this work. We are inspired by Chabot's commitment to inclusive dual enrollment and are proud to partner with them.

Today, the Bay Area K-16 Collaborative continued conversation with faculty and staff from K-12s, community colleges, and 4-year institutions about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) pathways. The group last met a few weeks ago at our in-person Fall Workshop, and this morning’s discussion followed up on two topics: STEM work-based learning and increasing dual enrollment instruction. We are excited to collaboratively move the work forward!

On Friday, over 100 K-12, community college, CSU, and UC teachers, counselors and administrators gathered at the Hayward Public Library to work together to address challenges and share solutions to implement equitable dual enrollment around the Bay Area. Hayward Mayor Mark Salinas welcomed the group to the space, Executive Director Agustin Cervantes, Ed.D. kicked off the day, and Career Ladders Project and Social Policy Research Associates facilitated engaging small group discussions on problems of practice and strategies to address them. There are too many people to thank for making this such a productive day! Important evidence supporting dual enrollment as an equity strategy, especially when it counts toward a-g requirements and college courses that will count toward a degree.
Black students who graduated high school with dual credit were likelier than average to enroll at a four-year college, to attend a selective college, and to complete a bachelor’s degree in a science, technology, engineering, or math field. “What we do get to see is that these Black students tend to be very underrepresented in dual enrollment participation, which is suggesting to us how stringent the barriers to dual enrollment are for this specific group of students,” CCRC's Tatiana Velasco said. “In general, it seems that for those [Black] students who are able to jump the hurdle of access to dual enrollment, they do really well.”

Thank you to Silicon Valley Leadership Group member, and Bay Area K-16 Collaborative Steering Committee member ENGIE North America Inc. for your leadership in preparing America's next generation of energy and sustainability professionals. This summer, Engie worked with 10 student interns from Oakland Unified School District, Dublin Unified School District, Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District. Over the course of the 8-week program, interns learned about LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), preparing them to take and pass the LEED Green Associate exam. They also completed a capstone project developing a LEED project that could be implemented in their school or community. Mentorship + training + certification. Engie continues to be the gold standard for industry-education partnerships. These are some ingenious project proposals. The students are right.
