?? The Buzz Behind Almonds: Why Bees Still Matter ???? The U.S. just experienced one of the worst honeybee colony losses on record—nearly 50% of managed colonies disappeared last year. For almond growers, this is alarming because honeybees play a crucial role in pollination. While there are some self-fertile varieties, almonds depend on bees to transfer pollen and ensure strong yields. Without healthy bee populations, both crop production and quality suffer. According to The Packer, key threats to bees include: ?? Climate change disrupting bloom cycles ?? Varroa mites, a deadly parasite ?? Pesticide exposure weakening colonies ?? Loss of forage and habitat Farmers and beekeepers are working together to support pollinators by: ?? Reducing chemical exposure in orchards ?? Planting cover crops and native perennial habitats, to provide diverse forage ?? Partnering with beekeepers to support hive health. Below are a few examples of this:????? Project Apis m. & Almond Farmers o??Almond farmers partner with Project Apis m. to plant cover crops like mustard and clover, providing bees with nutrition before and after bloom. They also coordinate hive placement and pesticide use to protect pollinators. Bee Friendly Farming Initiative o??Farmers commit to planting pollinator-friendly habitat, reducing pesticides, and providing water for bees. Beekeepers manage hive health and ensure safe forage, supporting both agriculture and bee populations. While research in almond breeding continues, bees remain essential for most varieties—and for many other crops that sustain our food system.
