The 2024 Nissan Motor Corporation ARIYA has a peak charging speed of 130 kilowatts. The 2024 Blazer EV is rated at 150 kilowatts. Therefore, buyers should get the Blazer EV if they need to charge quickly, right? Not quite. A manufacturer's peak charging speed is not helpful in measuring how quickly an electric car will charge. The more discerning number is the integral of the charging curve. Here's a quick overview. The Nissan ARIYA has a very flat charging curve, meaning it'll hold its 130-kilowatt peak for an extended period (around the 50% mark). On the other hand, the Blazer EV will no longer see its peak at around the 20% mark. In other words, the Blazer EV has a very steep charging curve (it'll hit 150kW but for a very short period). This is more apparent when we look at the average power accepted. From 10 to 80%, the Nissan ARIYA took 5 fewer minutes (despite having a larger battery) and averaged 10 more kilowatts. In the end, the Nissan ARIYA has a 13% lower peak charge rate than the Blazer EV on paper. However, regarding actual usefulness, the Nissan Ariya will charge around 14% faster. It costs $1,700 extra to get the hybrid version of the Toyota Highlander. Here's why it's worth it: 1. More responsive acceleration: electric motors are all about instant torque, and this helps make the car feel quicker. 2. Gasoline savings: in under three years of driving, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid will have already broke even with the non-hybrid. 3. Living with an electric car rewires your brain. No longer are parking lots seen as places to simply leave your car. They are now seen as opportunities for your vehicle to gain energy. Any time my car is idle, I view it as an opportunity to gain energy via a level 2 charger. Going to lunch for an hour? That's 8kWh of energy, or 27 miles of range! Exploring a new town for 2 hours? That's 15kWh, or 53 miles of range! Embarking on a rugged hike for 4 hours? That's 30kWh, or 106 miles of range! Sleeping over at a hotel for 10 hours? That's 76kWh or 266 miles of range! There is nothing more antithetical to the concept of efficiency than pure gasoline-powered cars. The most fuel-efficient gas-powered car is the Mitsubishi Mirage, an arguably terrible car that makes 78 horsepower. But it only gets 39 mpg. To get better fuel economy, you need to electrify as there is so much wasted energy through braking. The Toyota Prius gets 57 mpg, a 46% increase over the mirage. It's also a larger vehicle and has 116 more horsepower. There's a ceiling with ICEV efficiency, and a hybrid powertrain can help it break through. Also, while some might comment on why I added 0-60 times, first off, I rarely read the comments. Second, it shows that power and efficiency are no longer mutually exclusive with electrification. #ev #hybrid #battery #engineering
