A great idea for next Halloween…
Last night I handed out geology goodie bags to trick or treaters, while dressed up as Sherlock Holmes since geologists are basically Earth detectives ???♀??? Not to mention the obvious pun: “It’s sedimentary, my dear Watson!” - I gave kids the choice between a rock or mineral, candy, or both! It was a huge success and my 33 baggies were gone before the end of the night. Kids gleefully picking a cool rock or mineral and excitedly running back down the driveway to show their parents just warmed my heart! - There were three sample types in the bowl: garnets, quartz, and shale. I collected the garnets and shale myself on my adventures and the quartz was from a bulk bag I got online. I typed up little info cards that include kid-friendly explanations and a notice on the back stating it’s a real rock/mineral and NOT edible ?? This kind of thing was super easy to put together and I absolutely recommend it to others who wanna make a difference in their community by introducing kids to geology! - #halloween #scicomm #geology #mineral #rocks

I can’t believe we missed celebrating #GeologicMapDay !
??Attention, geology enthusiasts! In celebration of #GeologicMapDay, explore our Unified Geologic Map of the Moon! ?? Created by the USGS Astrogeology Science Center, in collaboration with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the Lunar and Planetary Institute, this first-ever comprehensive map reveals the moon’s entire surface geology, combining Apollo-era data with recent satellite missions. Not only does it show the 4.5-billion-year history of our lunar neighbor, but it’s also a key tool for future human missions and an invaluable resource for scientists, educators, and space enthusiasts. Download the entire map and legend here: https://ow.ly/YMUw50TOTY1 #EarthScienceWeek #NASA #MoonMap #GeologicMap #Apollo #LunarScience #SpaceExploration #Geology ??: This animation shows a rotating globe of the new Unified Geologic Map of the Moon with shaded topography from the Lunar Orbiter Laser Altimeter (LOLA). This past Friday, our monthly luncheon speaker, Zia Tammami, PG, presented a very interesting talk on the successful resolution of unique technical and regulatory challenges that came with managing spent bauxite "red mud" at the former Ormet alumina refinery in Ascension Parish. Not only is he a sharp colleague (in both intelligence AND wardrobe), Zia hosts the longest continuously running radio show in North America, on WBRH, our local public radio station operated by the students and faculty of Baton Rouge High School. Zia the Cat is as knowledgeable about jazz music is he is about igneous intrusions, sedimentary strata, and metamorphics.

In a few weeks, our October 2024 monthly luncheon at Mike Anderson's Seafood Restaurant is scheduled for October 11, 2024! Title: Red Mud/ Spent Bauxite Waste Management Abstract: In the year 2000, Ormet Corporation converted its alumina manufacturing process to the Bayer process and introduced the Dry Stacking method for storage and management of spent bauxite residue, or "Red Mud," in?approximately 400 acres of earthen impoundments at its Burnside facility in Ascension Parish, Louisiana.?The Red Mud waste disposal process faced two challenging environmental issues, control of air emissions of Red Mud dust (with a pH of 13.0) and very large volumes of "contact water" runoff during major rainfall events. Belle Terre Consultants and PEC of Baton Rouge developed a creative geotechnical and engineering solution to control particulate air emissions from five large impoundments and to manage and?contain contact water from the Red Mud disposal areas.?The resulting design was successfully negotiated with the Waste Permit Division of Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and saved the Burnside facility over $18 million in 2017. Speaker: Zia O. Tammami, PG, is President and Managing Partner of Belle Terre Consultants, LLC. Mr. Tammami graduated from Louisiana State University in 1980 with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Geology and International Economics.?In addition to Zia Tammami’s technical expertise, local radio listeners may also know “Zia the Cat” as host of the longest-running jazz/blues radio show in North America.
