Every year, coastal communities suffer millions in flood damage. Yet, better underwater mapping could mitigate much of this risk. By leveraging high-resolution seafloor data, we can identify risks before they become disasters. In fact, NOAA’s latest dataset is already improving flood-risk assessments by filling gaps in tidal data along our coasts. But this isn't just about flood prevention—it's about changing how we dredge. Right now, dredging is largely reactive. Harbors, marinas, and waterways only get dredged after buildup becomes a problem. But what if we used real-time seafloor data to anticipate sediment shifts and maintain depth before access is blocked?
