Last Friday, November 1 — Vice Chief of Naval Operations James Kilby toured BIW and visited with members of the DDG 122 crew prior to its sail away. Kilby, a four-star admiral who reports to Chief of Naval Operations Lisa Franchetti, had a briefing on how the Kitting Terminal is improving material delivery to the mechanics and learned about the construction of a new Pier Support and Trade Center where the former Boiler Shop was located. He also toured production buildings where he learned about efforts to recover schedule. Kilby is familiar with BIW workmanship. He has served on BIW-built ships USS Sampson (DDG 10) and USS Philippine Sea (CG 58) and his major command was aboard USS Monterey (CG 61), including its maiden Ballistic Missile Defense deployment in 2011. Kilby also addressed the Sailors of DDG 122, the future USS John Basilone, just before they departed BIW to sail down the Kennebec River one last time. The ship is bound for New York where it will be commissioned into the U.S. Navy fleet tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 9. The event will be livestreamed at 9:45 a.m. at https://lnkd.in/eEFXhx6A

On Tuesday, October 15 — Hull 524, the future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127) floated free of the drydock and is now berthed at Pier 2. Winching the drydock from in front of Shipway 1 began beneath an almost full moon Monday night. As the sun rose Tuesday morning, the drydock was in the river filling ballast tanks. As the drydock gradually submerged, Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127) floated free of its cradle. “The launch went very smoothly,” said Chief Superintendent Sarah Richardson. “Everyone knew what needed to be done and executed accordingly.” Guided by tugboats and crews on the drydock wingwalls, the ship was moved out into the open water. Tugs then guided it to Pier 2 where work immediately got underway. We’re excited to be in the water and get this ship into the next phase of completion. #BathBuiltisBestBuilt #BathIronWorks #DDG127 #PatrickGallagher #GeneralDynamics
