Last week I had the honor of presenting on “Building a Winning Company Culture” at the Resideo CONNECT meeting in Tampa. I am a firm believer that all we have accomplished over the years is because of our culture and the people it allows to personally succeed in our company. The presentation was really the story of how over the years we at Bates Security built our culture from when we were a young scrappy company into what we are today. We do a lot of meaningful things and have fun doing them to enhance our culture but the foundation to having a winning and thriving culture is your people. You have to surround yourself with the right people on your team and then you have to have accountability for all, including yourself, to help the culture thrive, attract and then keep the right people. I think we all have heard you need to have “the right people on the bus and in the right seat” and it is so true. We first learned this from industry icon John Jennings The former owner of Safeguard in Arizona when he spoke at a previous First Alert (now Resideo) convention back in the early 2000’s. He taught the A+P=E principle which we took back to our team and started implementing. It stands for Attitude + Performance = Employment. Essentially it’s about having the right people in your company and holding them and yourself accountable. This is really where our journey of building the best culture we could have began. We quit tolerating poor attitudes or poor performance and began holding people accountable. Overtime, we shed the people that didn’t fit or want to fit the A+P=E principle and built a team full of people that did. As we got the right people on the team we started to have less problems to deal with which created more bandwidth allowing us to focus more and more on growing the company. And our improved culture helped attract and keep more good people as we grew, which we did! About four years ago we embraced EOS Worldwide with our implementor Barry Barrett and we learned how to better express the APE principle through our Core Values and our Company Vision (plus many other things!) which he helped guide us in realizing. Our culture was already good but the work the last four years greatly enhanced our culture and made it the winning thriving culture it is today.
