Senior Economist Matthew Zahn participated in the Collaborative Health Economics Seminar Series (CHESS), presenting his paper “Entry and Competition in Insurance Markets: Evidence from Medicare Advantage.” CHESS is sponsored by The George Washington University- Milken Institute School of Public Health. Dr. Zahn discussed the potential impact on Medicare Advantage by government-designed payment systems that attract competitive firms with cost controls. Partner Jeffrey Brown submitted two expert reports on behalf of a leading electronics manufacturer in arbitration concerning an alleged breach of a licensing agreement. The reports evaluated claims for unpaid royalties and discussed several reasons why the plaintiff’s damages estimates exceeded its actual monetary loss from the alleged breach. Bates White Affiliate Marti Murray was retained as the PCI Liquidating Trust’s expert witness and submitted two reports in Douglas A. Kelley, in his capacity as the Trustee of the PCI Liquidating Trust v. Westford Special Situations Master Fund, L.P. et al. On November 13, 2024, the US District Court of Minnesota issued a decision that included a $59 million judgment plus prejudgment interest against defendant Steve Stevanovich. The decision highlighted Ms. Murray’s asset tracing analysis, saying that she “conducted a reasonable and persuasive analysis of the documentation available.” The PCI Liquidating Trust was established to pay damages to victims of The Petters scheme, widely viewed as one of the largest Ponzi schemes of all time.
