??Do you want to build a snow-bat? ?? BCI’s Subterranean Team partnered with Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife to assess winter bat population in the state. ?? We snowshoed through the backcountry to lava tube caves and abandoned mines on a search for wintering bats, which were discovered high on the cave ceilings, or nestled within cracks in the rock walls—often in freezing temperatures. ?? These population assessments provide land management agencies with valuable information to guide current and future decisions, including the protection of critical bat habitats. ?? ?? Josh Hydeman

Conserving the world's bats and their ecosystems to ensure a healthy planet
关于我们
Bat Conservation International’s (BCI) mission is to conserve the world’s bats and their ecosystems to ensure a healthy planet. BCI is devoted to conservation, education, and research initiatives involving bats and the ecosystems they serve. BCI’s conservation efforts have resulted in permanent protection for a majority of North America's most important remaining bat caves, saved millions of bats from being accidentally buried during mine safety closures, and led to the establishment of the first national park in U.S. history to protect a tropical rain forest. BCI has sponsored research documenting the key roles of bats in major ecosystems, supported training for graduate students in 55 countries, and trained hundreds of wildlife managers from more than 20 countries in bat management and conflict avoidance techniques.

???? Securing a Wilder Future for Bats We our proud to be welcoming our newest two Alliance partners, Bat Conservation International and the Northeast Mexico Agave Restoration Network, who are working together to restore agave habitats so that people and bats can thrive. ???An example of the astonishing success of Bat Conservation International : the remarkable recovery of lesser long-nosed bats, whose populations grew from 1,000 known individuals in 1988 to an estimated 200,000 in 2024 after bat roosts were legally protected. ???? ?? Now, alongside Northeast Mexico Agave Restoration Network - a coalition of non-profits, ejido communities, private ranchers, federal and state agencies, companies and universities - they have launched the Agave Restoration Initiative. ???? ???? It is supporting endangered bats as they migrate northwards from Mexico to the US every Spring, which rely heavily on the nectar from agave on route. The Agave Restoration Initiative emphasises equitable, community-based work that supports both bat recovery and sustainable livelihoods. The project has established 26 nurseries growing agave for habitat restoration, alongside vegetables and medicinal plants for local communities. It also trains women-owned businesses in mezcal production, habitat restoration, and native medicinal plants, empowering women to lead in conservation and economic development. These efforts improve livelihoods in Mexico and the US, fostering a resilient future for people and wildlife. ????????????????????

Did you know bats play an integral role in Arkansas’s ecosystem and agricultural sector? Researchers at Boston University estimated that bats’ annual pest control services in the U.S. are worth at least $3.7 billion and potentially as much as $53 billion. In Arkansas, we have a lot to thank bats for – from combating harmful crop pests to chomping those annoying mosquitos. Check out my latest article, “Arkansas’s bats: Hidden heroes of pest control,” for Arkansas Times for an overview of why healthy bat populations are critical, a snapshot of current threats, and examples of proven conservation efforts that can be implemented by landowners as well as individuals. It was a pleasure to speak with and learn from passionate experts at Bat Conservation International and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Special thanks to Dan Taylor and Kathryn Slater at BCI as well as Blake Sasse and Lauren Marshall at AGFC. Learned a ton and couldn’t fit it all in this article! I may need to write another bat article in the future. You can find the article on the Arkansas blog and in Arkansas Wild, a special publication of Arkansas Times. #Bats #Arkansas #Agriculture #Wildlife #Conservation Bat Conservation International Arkansas Game and Fish Commission ARKANSAS GAME & FISH FOUNDATION https://lnkd.in/guTWbD-t
