Native plants add biodiversity to communities’ ecosystem. ???? Kelly Bloedorn, MS, a member of the BH team living in Minneapolis, frequently taps into resources at the University of Minnesota to identify the plants in her yard. “I found this goldenrod along a chain link fence near my yard, covered in bumblebees. Living in a city, I’m always excited to find a native flower in my yard that I didn’t plant. It helps remind me that biodiversity can exist anywhere, we just need to open our eyes.” Get familiar with regional native species and protect any volunteer plants that may pop up in the spring! Resources are typically available through university extension & outreach offices. #plantforward #bumblebees #nativeflowers #minnesota #biodiversity

Kelly Bloedorn from our team decided to shop local and try the recipe from our recent post, Butternut Squash & Black Bean Enchiladas! See how they turned out! ???? “I LOVE this recipe - the sauce compliments the enchilada filling perfectly! I also took this opportunity to visit my local farmer’s market to buy a squash and, after being drawn to the fresh herby smell at Burning River Farm’s stand ??, decided to get a bunch of cilantro for garnish. In my opinion, choosing local does not have to be all-or-nothing. Even a couple small substitutions can make a big difference - for nutrient-density and for taste!” -Kelly Burning River Farm is an organic farm in Frederic, WI that uses methods like cover crop rotation to build soil health. "The Rodale Regenerative Health Conference brought together a diverse group of passionate professionals united by their commitment to advancing the mission of "healthy soil, healthy people, healthy planet." Surrounded by the autumn beauty of Rodale Institute, I was deeply moved by the innovative work being done across agriculture, food systems, and healthcare to create a more regenerative and resilient world. The experience was both humbling and awe-inspiring, leaving me with a renewed sense of purpose and hope for the future of our planet and its inhabitants. The conference featured inspiring keynote speakers, including Dr. Steven Chen, Anne Biklé, and Will Harris, each bringing powerful insights to the regenerative health movement. I had the privilege of connecting with remarkable individuals like Dr. Chen, Recipe4Health model, Anne Bikle, What your Food Ate co-author, and Brian Fowler from Northern Illinois University, who shared exciting developments about their edible campus initiative. Perhaps most humbling was the opportunity to share the stage with my esteemed speaking partners: Dr. Gary Soffer, Dr. Michelle Loy, and Dr. Lori Walsh. Together, we presented our talk titled "Soil to Health: An Integrative Approach to the Role of Sourcing in Food as Medicine & Regenerative Organic Agriculture in Health." This presentation encapsulated the conference's core themes, highlighting the intricate connections between soil health, integrative approaches in food as medicine, and human wellbeing. The collaborative atmosphere, bringing together diverse fields from agriculture to medicine, reinforced the interconnectedness of soil health, human health, and planetary well-being." - Erin #regenerativerecipes #soilhealthishumanhealth #regenerativeagriculture #localfood

“I would spend weeks in trenches, four, five feet down, running tile lines [irrigation] and the soil always smelled dead, smelled stale,” says Cotter. “And then when we started doing cover crops, I realized, wow, it smells good. Like a good cup of coffee.” __ Basil's Harvest centers around the belief that soil health is fundamental to human health. Through our work, we get to partner with incredible organizations and farms that share this belief and work on many different sides to support the health of the environment and the health of humans. Today, Minnesota Soil Health Coalition is sponsoring a Soil Health Field Day at Tom Cotter's Farm in Austin, Minnesota. They'll have field activities about cover crop ID and strip-till, with speakers Seth Watkins owner of Pinhook Farm, TJ Kartes of TJ Kartes Farm, and Jon Stevens, a crop nutrition expert. We are so excited about this event and wanted to share a bit about Tom Cotter and his farm with our community. Check out Mary Meade's great article in Green America about Tom's work around biodiversity, soil health, and living harmoniously with the land! #soilhealthishumanhealth #regenerativeagriculture

Dietitian's take on Food Trends Ardent Mills' recent research highlights some key trends driving consumer food choices, and It's interesting to see how these intersect with classic nutrition principles and evolving societal values. While mindful ingredient choices and sustainability concerns are gaining traction,?the report reminds us that?taste remains king.?As a #RegisteredDietitian,?I know that encouraging #sustainable and #nutritious eating habits hinges on deliciousness.?It's also exciting to see how consumers increasingly value cultural heritage and seek 'feel-good' foods,?showing that nutrition is about more than just numbers on a label. Three tips for #CPGs: ??Prioritize Flavor Innovation:?Don't compromise on taste while pursuing health or sustainability goals.?Explore novel flavor combinations,?global cuisines,?and exciting textures to create products that consumers genuinely crave. ??Tell the Ingredient Story:?Transparency builds trust.?Highlight the heritage of ingredients,?sustainable sourcing practices,?and nutritional benefits in a way that resonates with consumers' desire for connection and knowledge. ??Embrace 'Permissible Indulgence':?Create products that balance healthfulness and indulgence.?Think of wholesome ingredients with a touch of luxury – perhaps through unique flavors,?textures,?packaging, or a connection to special occasions or cultural traditions. In today's complex foodscape,?success lies in understanding that consumers want it all:?great taste,?good-for-you ingredients,?a sense of heritage,?and a positive impact on the planet. #ArdentMills #TrendToTable #Dietitian #FoodTrends #CPG #Nutrition #Sustainability #ConsumerInsights #MarketTrends #Branding #SustainableFood #CulinaryHeritage

?? New Publication Alert! ?? Very thrilled to share a publication resulting from some of my work on ?? food systems literacy ?? during my PhD. In this paper with my amazing co-supervisors and co-authors Dr. Evan Fraser and Dr. Jess Haines, we present the Food Systems Literacy Competencies Framework for youth, resulting from a modified Delphi study with Experts. We highlight that experts agree that youth need holistic food systems literacy and present 50 key food systems literacy competencies that achieved expert consensus as being very important across 5 thematic areas. See the Framework snapshot below! The Framework provides a roadmap for food systems education and knowledge evaluation. Food systems are complex and often place-based, so competencies must be adapted to be context specific. These competencies can complement other food literacy competencies, for a more holistic approach to food education and food literacy evaluation. Check it out (open access) in the Journal Food Policy?? https://lnkd.in/eGPvxi3d #foodsystems #foodsystemsliteracy #foodliteracy #competencies Geography, Environment and Geomatics University of Guelph
