This year at ECMS, we proudly celebrated International Women’s Day?under the theme #AccelerateAction. Last Friday, our Shanghai team?came together, wearing purple, to mark this important day. I had the privilege of presenting gifts to our female colleagues in appreciation of their contributions. Our group photo captured both the spirit of the day and the energy of our incredible team. Innovation knows no boundaries. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of working alongside outstanding female colleagues who have played a pivotal role in our success. From developing breakthrough catalyst technologies?to driving sustainable solutions, women in our global R&D and Application teams?are shaping the future of clean mobility and environmental progress — helping us protect the elements of our life. Rising fuel costs and environmental concerns challenge commuters every day. @Bajaj Auto’s Freedom 125 — the world’s first dual-fuel CNG motorcycle ??? — provides a solution, but tackling emissions control required innovation. BASF ECMS is proud to have partnered with Bajaj Auto to overcome these challenges. ?? Our cutting-edge catalyst solutions played a key role in launching this groundbreaking motorcycle, ensuring it meets environmental standards while delivering sustainable, cost-effective mobility. This collaboration underscores our commitment to cleaner transportation solutions and our drive to advance eco-friendly technologies for a greener future. ?? ?? Last week, the BASF ECMS Leadership Team visited the Hofors, Sweden site, spending time with colleagues who operate the site’s smelting operation ?? for spent automotive catalyst materials. The site, acquired by ECMS last year, increases the recycling business in Europe and brings in best-in-class pyro-metallurgical technology providing flexibility to process high carbon containing materials. ?? Recycled catalysts go through a smelting process and are then refined to produce the high purity precious metal needed to make new catalysts and other end use products, supporting a circular economy. Recycled platinum group metals (PGMs) can also lower carbon emissions ?? by up to 97%, in comparison to refining mined or primary materials. ?? Meet Katarzyna Cabaj, EB & CSR Specialist and Team Leader TATM in Poland! ?? Katarzyna joined BASF ECMS in 2022 and has been a driving force of energy and ideas ever since. Her role blends Employer Branding, CSR, and HR activities, making every day dynamic and full of opportunities for creativity and growth. ?? One of her proudest achievements? Leading the EB campaign for BCP in Poland ????—from photo shoots and outdoor campaigns to video production and career page updates. She also played a key role in implementing CSR initiatives, including an Employee Volunteer Program with eight completed projects in 2024. And alongside her team, she won a prestigious ECMS LEAD Award for organizing a children’s camp—an experience that underscored the power of teamwork and making a real impact. ?? Beyond work, Katarzyna finds joy in yoga ??♀?, reading ??, and traveling ??—she’s a huge fan of the Canary Islands and has already visited five! Our journey began with ?? a breakthrough: the first catalytic converters for automobiles, which appeared on 1975-model cars. A year later, we introduced the modern Three-Way Conversion Catalyst (TWC), a revolutionary technology that transformed emissions control. Today, the TWC destroys more than 90% of hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) from gasoline engines—making today’s vehicles more than 100 times cleaner than pre-1974 models. ???? Since then, our TWC has eliminated over?a billion tons?of harmful pollutants globally. Building on this success, we introduced the?Four-Way Catalyst, which removes particulate matter (PM) in addition to gaseous pollutants. Now, our advanced systems convert over?45 billion particulates daily, while patented Zeolite SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) technology reduces NOx from diesel engines by?more than 90%. As a chemical engineer, Liangfang thrives on tackling complex challenges, working alongside talented colleagues to develop cutting-edge technologies that enhance efficiency, sustainability, and cost savings for customers worldwide. Her impact is tangible — one of her proudest achievements was leading the development of an advanced technology that helped a customer significantly reduce costs. But Liangfang’s journey isn’t just about scientific breakthroughs. ?? Balancing a demanding career with motherhood taught her the importance of prioritization, resilience, and strong support systems. With the encouragement of mentors, colleagues, and family, she continues to excel.? She believes that an inclusive workplace brings together unique perspectives and drives multi-dimensional thinking and breakthrough solutions. As more women step into science, engineering, and leadership, Liangfang sees an even brighter future for the next generation.
