Leading pharmaceutical researchers have realised they've hit a critical point: models like AlphaFold have exhausted the publicly available data they were trained on. New breakthroughs will depend on new datasets. That’s why we’re excited to see initiatives like Apheris, helping drug developers securely pool and collaborate on proprietary data. And it’s why, at Basecamp Research, we’ve taken a different but complementary approach: building the world’s largest biodiscovery programme from the ground up. Over the past five years, we’ve explored uncharted biology to capture the full complexity of life on Earth. When AlphaFold was trained on just a fraction of our proprietary data, the result was a 6x improvement in prediction performance. I recently had the privilege of presenting at the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ)Symposium in Singapore, where legal experts, conservationists, and policymakers came together to discuss the future of ocean governance beyond national boundaries. Our panel explored many key topics, such as the High Seas Treaty, marine conservation, research, and fair benefit-sharing, highlighting both challenges and opportunities on the horizon. During our panel, I had the opportunity to share real-life examples of Access and Benefit Sharing solutions from our Marine collaborative projects at Basecamp Research, showcasing our dedication to sustainable and equitable practices in commercial research activities.
