This pest is a big concern for palm trees, but with new strategies for early detection and management, we’re ready to fight back. ?? A big thank you to Clay Rogers for hosting our inaugural South American Palm Weevil (SAPW) working group! The discussions were engaging and provided valuable insights into this serious pest issue. For those unfamiliar, SAPW is currently decimating palm populations in San Diego and is expected to become a significant threat as it spreads through Orange County and the LA area. I’m inspired by the dedicated professionals—a true cross-section of specialists in palm tree management and care as well as community forestry management—who gathered today to address this threat and commit their valuable time and resources to battle the "evil weevil." Massive thanks to Dr. Hoddle and Ricardo Aguilar for providing valuable updates. Early effects of drought include wilting or discoloration of foliage, shedding of leaves or needles, and reduction in growth. As drought stress continues, plants become more susceptible to disease and insect issues to which they would normally be resistant.
