Edward Bartholomew and Terry Jewell had a great time this week at LEDucationNYC 2025! Each opportunity we have to gather as an industry to learn of new innovations, see new products, and talk with other like-minded lighting folks is wonderful. We love representing our amazing #advocacy groups of Light Justice, BUILD (Black United in Lighting & Design), North American Coalition of Lighting Industry Queers (NACLIQ), and Equity in Lighting, spreading the word about these amazing groups and the much needed beneficial work that they have been working on. #LEDucation2025 #LEDucationNYC #Advocacy #Equity #Inclusion #Light_Justice #Justice #BUILD #NACLIQ #EquityinLighting

Let us continue to follow Light Justice and work toward a just lighting industry! #Advocacy #Light_Justice #Equity
A message from our Light Justice Curators, to our Light Justice Community. Toward a Just Lighting Industry: 1. Support those in danger due to immigrant status, sexual identity, or other oppressed status. Share resources, financial or otherwise.? Stand up for the vulnerable. 2. Advocate to correct injustice by speaking out. If you have a platform, offer it to others who seek to speak out and resist oppression. 3. Don't pre-censor yourself or others who are speaking out against oppression. 4. Don't enable oppressors by being silent. 5. Join advocacy groups and use your talents to advance just causes. 6. Take care of yourself during these dire, stressful times.? Recharge your empathy batteries. And let’s continue to celebrate efforts toward just, equitable design for all. If you’ve been working on projects that serve under-resourced communities, we want to amplify them: apply for the Light Justice NOW awards through designing lighting by February 7th! And if you’d like to be inspired by action in 2024, or join our advocacy efforts in 2025, check out the links through our posts and in our bio. #Light_Justice #Advocacy #StandUp #Resource

Our firm was delighted to present Light Justice in the Public Realm to MASS Design Group this past Tuesday (02/04). We love engaging with firms about the important intersection between social equity and justice with lighting design. This hybrid AIA accredited presentation looks at the historical use of lighting in both marginalized and privileged communities, showing the distinction between "just" lighting- which benefits communities- and "unjust" lighting, which is oppressive. This presentation outlines the principles of Light Justice, showing how designers can bring positive solutions for communities in need through stakeholder engagement. Thank you to Ching Ling from Exposure.Inc for helping sponsor the lunch. We hope this conversation inspires more equitable design solutions that address the needs of vulnerable, under-resourced communities. #Light_Justice #SocialEquity #DesignJustice #Advocacy #AIA #LunchandLearn #BlackOwnedBusiness

Thank you, Bartholomew | Lighting for an insightful presentation! It was an eye-opening discussion on how lighting can both empower and oppress communities, particularly those that have been historically marginalized. We look forward to future conversations on equitable lighting design.
Bartholomew Lighting was honored to present Light Justice in The Public Realm, to DiMella Shaffer yesterday. This AIA credited talk focuses on how quality lighting is a signifier of power, status, and privilege and how quality lighting has been denied to marginalized communities. This is approached through understanding the historical precedents that show how lighting is used as a tool for surveillance, policing, and the control of nocturnal behavior in communities of color. Through examining case studies, the attendees learn how neighborhoods are impacted by the unequal application of lighting in the environment as well as it's impact on the physical and mental health of those living in these conditions. By providing insights and examples of good or "just" lighting versus oppressive "unjust" lighting, we described how lighting and nighttime visual quality have been overlooked or undermined in historically marginalized neighborhoods. We look forward to future presentations regarding how unjust lighting affects underserved communities. We hope to engage with like-minded firms to host this conversation, hoping to inspire more equitable design solutions for vulnerable under-resourced communities. #Light_Justice #SocialEquity #DesignJustice #Advocacy #AIA #BlackOwnedBusiness
