We are honored to announce that we've received a grant from Davos Alzheimer's Collaborative —a pioneering worldwide initiative to cure Alzheimer’s disease and improve brain health—for a pilot study demonstrating the impact of AI-based cognitive assessments in the primary care setting to enable early diagnosis. “Identifying patients in the mild cognitive impairment stage and referring them to an Alzheimer’s specialist on time will give them the best chance of delaying cognitive decline," says Anna D. Virginia Prendergast, PhD, director of advanced practice nursing at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute, traveled to the East African country of Tanzania in September to visit Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre - KCMC. She aimed to get a sense of the hospital's current nursing services and how they could be bolstered through the hospital's partnership with #BarrowGlobal. Virginia joined bedside rounds, attended the hospital's morbidity and mortality conference, and met with staff and leadership. She engaged in constructive discussions and provided valuable mentorship in both #neuroscience care and oral hygiene. Virginia returned to Barrow with several ideas for enhancing #nursing services and thus patient outcomes, not only at KCMC but across the region. "At every point along the way, I was impressed by the staff, their resourcefulness, and their openness to discuss new ways to provide care," Virginia said of her visit. This opportunity is available to #neurosurgery and #neurology trainees who are enrolled in a residency program in a low- or middle-income country, or #neurosurgeons and #neurologists who have completed such a residency within the past five years. When John Burroughs of Chandler, #Arizona first noticed a scratchy feeling in his throat in the summer of 2022, he thought he'd picked up a virus or had irritation from the wildfire smoke surrounding his cabin in Idaho. He was shocked to learn he had #oropharyngealcancer. Fueled by his faith, his love for his family, support from friends, and encouraging words from a class of fifth-graders, John fought through seven weeks of radiation and chemotherapy at the #HeadandNeckCancer Program at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute. Today, the 63-year-old father remains #cancerfree and is sharing his story, both to express his gratitude for his medical team and to help others who might be facing a similar diagnosis.
