Last week, our Executive Director attended the Tax Justice Workshop in Orlando, Florida—an incredible space to connect, collaborate, and strategize on how to make tax policy actually work for working families of color. From barriers to employment and housing, to the economic gaps widened by incarceration—we know the system wasn’t built for us. But every room we step into, we’re changing that. Whether it’s tax justice, policy reform, or reentry support—we are constantly showing up for our folks. Because our people deserve a seat at the table and the tools to flip the whole system. During her time in prison, she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, graduating summa cum laude upon her release. Jovanda now dedicates her life to empowering others as a community organizer for Atlanta Community Support Project, reentry coordinator for the Chillon Project at Life University, and Engage Fellow for the Georgia Coalition for Higher Education in Prison. She also works with teens at YELLS Community Action Cafe, helping them plan events to improve their community on Franklin Gateway. Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Positive Psychology, Jovanda continues her passion for learning while researching for her organization, Tri7ecta, which trains those working with vulnerable populations. This past weekend, our Executive Director joined a powerful panel at the Just Cause: A Justice-Impacted Symposium in Atlanta—centered on restoring the social and legal rights of justice-impacted people. Held at CreateATL, this event brought together community, advocates, and leaders committed to changing the narrative and dismantling the systems that keep our people locked out long after incarceration. Our ED shared her lived experience and the bold work we are doing to build power, shift policy, and fight for the dignity and rights of our people. Because restoration is justice—and we won’t stop until our folks are fully seen, heard, and free.
