There are over 92,000 dams in the U.S., each with its own unique challenges—and an average age of 61 years. Managing risks across these structures is no easy feat. This is where risk-informed decision making, or RIDM, comes in. New and evolving regulatory requirements reflect a shift toward this risk-based approach, which helps owners identify risks, prioritize repair measures, and move implementation forward. Barr is honored to have contributed to the Minnesota Zoo’s Treetop Trail project, which was recently selected as Engineering News-Record’s (ENR’s) Best of the Best in the Specialty Construction category. Each year, ENR hosts the Regional Best Projects Awards competition to recognize excellence in U.S. design and construction for fostering innovation, safety culture, and community impact. A panel of judges selected 20 winners from 800+ contenders. The zoo hired a team led by Snow Kreilich Architects, which asked Barr to serve as the civil engineer on this unique project. Barr’s team?assisted with wetland delineation and permitting; civil, stormwater, and electrical engineering; and support for SITES certification, which recognizes the project’s use of sustainable and resilient landscapes. Other project partners included Buro Happold, MEYER BORGMAN JOHNSON, PCL Construction (project submitter for the competition), TEN x TEN Landscape Architecture, and Victus Engineering. Barr proudly assisted with the Altona Dam removal and river restoration project in Michigan, which was recently featured in American Rivers' 2024 dam removal report. Built in the 1860s for a sawmill and flour mill, the deteriorated dam posed safety hazards and blocked aquatic organism passage. To improve public safety and aquatic habitat, the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly and partners hired Barr for dam-removal and stream-restoration design, permitting, and construction observation. See the before and after photos in the report linked below. #ProjectsAtBarr #DamRemoval #RiverRestoration #AltonaDam
