Defending and Restoring Mt. Hood National Forest

关于我们

Founded in 1999, Bark is a place-based, community-powered organization focused on defending and restoring Mt. Hood National Forest and surrounding public lands. Our mission is to transform Mt. Hood National Forest into a place where natural processes prevail, wildlife thrives, and local communities have a social, cultural, and economic investment in its restoration and preservation. We offer free educational programs, guided hikes, trainings, and other events both in the Forest and in our office. Our office location in SE Portland provides a gathering place, lending library, and meeting space for our staff and volunteers.

We're excited to be attending PIELC this weekend! PIELC is University of Oregon's Public Interest Environmental Law Conference. This conference attracts activists, advocates, attorneys, scientists, government officials, and concerned citizens together to share information and strategies that will more effectively further the goals of environmental and social justice. Bark will be represented on two panels at PIELC: Jordan Latter, Bark's Forest Watch Coordinator, will be on the Watchdogging 101 panel; Meg Waller, Bark's Restoration Manager, will be facilitating the Beaver Believers panel.

We've already got 6 Parrott Creek Restoration opportunities coming up on our 2025 events calendar, the first of which is on MLK Day, Monday 1/20! Come out and help us restore this 80-acre site in Clackamas County for Indigenous folks to use it as a safe place to gather natural resources such as first foods, medicines, and basketry materials, connect with the land, and engage in environmental stewardship. Parrott Creek Child & Family Services Cultural Ecology Program is leading the restoration of this site through an Indigenous stewardship lens, prioritizing traditional ecological knowledge and service to the local Indigenous communities. This land site will provide Indigenous people a safe place to gather natural resources such as first foods, medicines, and basketry materials, connect with the land, and engage in environmental stewardship. Such opportunities are unfortunately limited as people are either restricted from gathering or don’t know if it is safe from waste, pollution, and chemicals. This is especially true for those living in the Portland metro area and other urban communities with limited access to natural areas. Through its priorities and approach, this program works towards simultaneously addressing trauma held in the youth, the Indigenous community, and the land. https://lnkd.in/gNQVDrVd

We're thinking about water for today's Give!Guide Big Drinks Day. Since 1999, Bark has saved tens of thousands of acres of forest from destructive logging projects that would've harmed Mt. Hood's forests and watersheds. Mt. Hood Nat'l Forest is home to Bull Run Watershed, which provides drinking water to one million people in the greater Portland area. Our beaver habitat and wetland surveys help us ensure a sustainable water supply and advocate for protections of this precious resource. Today, when you give $10 or more to Bark in Give!Guide, you'll not only be supporting work that protects Mt. Hood's watersheds, but you'll also have a chance to win a tasting and excursion from Soter Wines or one of three $200 gift cards to John's Marketplace (or one of five gift cards if you’re 35 and under!). So far we're at 34% of our $30,000 goal. Give $10 and enter to win here: https://lnkd.in/gvNYt_CN

On October 8-10, Indigenous peoples from around the world came together to create “Indigenous Peoples Principles and Protocols for Just Transition.” These 11 principles are not just the same old tired lines about the need for a ‘green economy,’ but rather a call for formal recognition of Indigenous peoples’ right to self-determination and the necessity of Indigenous knowledge for true environmental sustainability. Read the full “Principles and Protocols” here: https://lnkd.in/dzqdYfWM
