CORRECTIONS REQUESTED BY KONE ON THE B1M VIDEO ON MERDEKA 118 SPONSORED BY KONE: https://lnkd.in/efz8HYCx. ?Unfortunately, this is not the first case of Kone’s design plagiarism regarding this project. ??Starting with the tower’s first concepts by architect Fender Katsalidis (FK), the vertical transportation (VT) system was designed by Barker Mohandas, LLC. The following statement in this video is not true: “But the world's 2nd tallest building forced them [Kone] to take elevator engineering to new heights.?Here they [Kone] create a system that effectively splits the building into 5 zones..”. ?A simplified version of the VT system diagram is then shown without any credits as Kone’s diagram, and another statement that is untrue follows: “And Kone were brought in early in the design process to implement it, working with architects and engineers on how the core would be shaped. ?But at Merdeka 118 the push for super-efficient people flow didn’t stop there [coverage turns to double deck elevators]..”? All elevator system-traffic studies and drawing details contributing to the “shape” and dimensions of the core were by Barker Mohandas, LLC, in collaboration with FK.?And after the core was finalized, we estimated the loads of the VT equipment so the structural and MEP engineers could progress their work (see CTUBH.org for design team credits).?Kone was not involved in the design. Although, very late in design we asked Dr. Marja-Liisa Siikonen, then with Kone, to verify the performance improvements of our innovation called “harmonized dispatching” (that Kone later called their Advanced Destination Control System) – for just one (1) sample group of double deck local office elevators. ?That innovation became the cover article in Elevator World, November 2018. Yet, neither of us were the pioneers of the basic VT concepts taking such towers to “new heights”.?Our earlier LinkedIn post credits the architect who conceptualized sky-lobbies for the World Trade Center Twin Towers and notes its first variation with all double deck elevators as the Petronas Twin Towers (all 4 towers for which Otis provided the elevators): https://lnkd.in/gQSCaPJ2 Incidentally, on the footage of a ride in a long-travel scenic elevator, well before our detailed studies and drawings, in response to a question by structural engineer Les Robertson, I (Rick Barker) remember sketching a hoistway plan of those glass-backed elevators on a whiteboard at a design workshop in New York. All other design workshops were in Melbourne and Kuala Lumpur. Aside from the simulations we requested on our detailed innovation late in design, and already having information on the largest machines of the major manufacturers, our first involvement with Kone was to review their technical tenders for compliance with our design specifications and drawing details. After the award, we reviewed Kone’s project submittals.
