Mississippi leads the nation in 10 of 13 categories of birth defects, per the CDC. Birth defects are just one of the consequences of how oil and gas companies treat the handling and disposal of toxic waste generated from drilling oil and gas wells. Mississippi is home to over 1,800 waste disposal wells, which were drilled as oil and gas wells. These wells never produced oil/gas or produced for a while, stopped, and then were taken out of production.
