Seeing Mexico through our students' eyes. Last week, BarberMcMurry Architects Endowed Professor Javier Sánchez and students traveled to Mexico City and Oaxaca to learn more about architectural interventions that rehabilitate the urban fabric. The studio, which is comprised of students from architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture, will embrace Sánchez’s rehabilitative practice as they reimagine the former General Shale building in Downtown Knoxville, maintaining the building footprint and adapting it into a community hub that celebrates the proximity to the Tennessee River. #utkarchdesign #utkarchitecture #utkinteriorarchitecture UT School of Landscape Architecture

This fall, we welcome Javier Sánchez, HFAIA, of JSa, as our 2024 BarberMcMurry Architects Endowed Professor. Javier and his firm have been celebrated for their comprehensive architectural interventions that rehabilitate and restore the urban fabric. His projects have been internationally recognized and awarded, including a 2006 Golden Lion for Best Urban Projects at the Venice Biennale. This week, Javier and 16 architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture students traveled to Mexico City and Oaxaca to view JSa projects and other impactful sustainably focused designs and landscapes in Mexico. Since 2013, the BMA Professorship has funded internationally recognized architects as teachers and researchers for the benefit of #utkarchdesign students.

Next week we welcome two professionals as a part of our Lectures and Exhibits series, BarberMcMurry Architects Endowed Professor and Founding Partner and Principal of JSa Javier Sánchez, HFAIA, and Principal of Architecture Research Office Kim Yao, FAIA. Both lecturers will share work of their respective practices. Welcome to BMA, Stephanie & Cara! Stephanie Kreps, NCIDQ, LEED GA, has nine years of design experience in a variety of project types, particularly healthcare design. This focus has led to a deep understanding of the needs of patients and healthcare professionals, and a commitment to crafting interior environments that promote healing, support staff workflow and respite, and maximize an organization’s quality of care. Cara graduated from Virginia Tech in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. She recently relocated from Arlington, Virginia and has experience working on a variety of project types, including commercial, hospitality and healthcare.

Welcome to BMA, Michelle & Kathryn! Kathryn Baddorf is a graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design, where she earned her Master of Architecture, and joins BMA as an architectural graduate. She is also a Registered Nurse with experience as a clinical instructor and as a staff nurse in a local healthcare system. Michelle Barillaro joins BMA as Construction Administrator, with 28 years of experience in the architecture and construction industry, both as a registered architect and a project manager and cost estimator for commercial construction companies.

Welcome to the BMA team, Abigail & Lauren! Abigail Slater is an interior design student with a minor in marketing at East Tennessee State University, graduating in December. She is the founder and president of ETSU’s chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers, and has served as Vice President of Communications in Alpha Xi Delta. She has a background in the healthcare field, recently employed as a nursing assistant in neonatal intensive care and in oncology. Lauren White is an architecture student at the University of Tennessee College of Architecture + Design with a minor in Hispanic Studies. She has recently completed study abroad programs in Barcelona and San Jose. She is highly involved on campus, being a member of the philanthropy and diversity, equity and inclusion committees for Chi Omega. She recently was honored at the World Language and Cultures Awards Ceremony for the Mossman Scholars Study Abroad Award.
