Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum celebrates Maryland Day! ?? Founded in 1634, Maryland’s history is filled with resilience and strength, from its rich African American heritage to its cultural contributions. Join us in honoring the legacy of those who shaped our state! As we reflect on Maryland’s past, we also recognize the leaders, artists, and activists who continue to inspire future generations. Over Maryland Day weekend, our visitors experienced a special Women’s History Month tour led by Curator Martina Dodd and Exhibits Manager Leslie Rose. The tour highlighted the stories of Black women in Maryland, such as Harriet Tubman and Senator Verda Freeman Welcome and their roles in shaping Maryland and our museum. The tour included our latest exhibit, ‘Sacred Spaces’ which is on view until December 30, 2025. Visitors also participated in a restorative mindfulness sound bath and yoga activity led by Michele Blu Yoga and an engaging children’s activity with Baltimore Read Aloud. #MarylandDay #BDTMuseum #MarylandHistory

Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum celebrates Verda Freeman Welcome’s Birthday! ??? As the first Black women elected to the Maryland state senate, she paved the way for progress and representation. We honor her contributions to civil rights and leadership. In 1969, the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (then known as the Commission on Negro History and Culture) was founded under the leadership of Senator Verda Freeman Welcome, assisted by Dr. Benjamin Arthur Quarles. Welcome's vision was to develop a state commission to preserve and present Black history to inspire communities and help uproot racism in Maryland. The Commission then established the Banneker-Douglass Museum (now Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum) in 1984 to help carry out this vision. Her dedication to justice and equality continues to inspire new generations of changemakers.
