Preserving Maryland's African American Heritage
关于我们
The Banneker-Douglass Museum, named for Benjamin Banneker and Frederick Douglass, is dedicated to preserving Maryland’s African American heritage and serves as the state’s official repository of African American material culture. The original museum was housed within the former Mount Moriah African Methodist Episcopal Church in the heart of historic Annapolis. The Victorian-Gothic structure was included in the Annapolis Historic District in 1971 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Thanks to a community-led effort to transform the former Mt. Moriah AME Church building into a museum, the BDM opened on February 24, 1984. In light of this legacy, the BDM focuses on a community-based approach to building collections and exhibition and in providing tours, public programs, and other services. The museum is operated by the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC), which also operates the African American Heritage Preservation Program grant in partnership with Maryland Historical Trust.

In case you missed it, the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum celebrated its renaming on Nov. 1 with a ribbon-cutting and program featuring poet and activist Nikki Giovanni as the keynote speaker. Gov. Wes Moore, First Lady Dawn Moore, Ernestine Wyatt (3X great grand-niece of Harriet Tubman), County Executive Steuart Pittman, and the City of Annapolis, MD Mayor Gavin Buckley were among the guests present to celebrate the momentous, joyful, and historic occasion recognizing the contributions of Black women, specifically Eastern Shore-born and self-liberated freedom fighter Harriet Tubman. Del. Shaneka Henson and Sen. Cory McCray, who were instrumental in the legislative process of the renaming, gave remarks. The historic day marked a new era at the museum, shedding light on the role Black women’s labor and love have played in the history of the museum, the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture (MCAAHC), the state, and the nation. We thank all of our supporters, attendees, volunteers, and viewers for joining us in celebration of this historic occasion. A special thank you to our presenting sponsor BGE and our supporting sponsors The Links, Incorporated., Annapolis Chapter, and The Arts Council of Anne Arundel County.

THIS WEEKEND! | Join us for an exciting, hands-on workshop led by artist Jabari Jefferson as he shares his creative vision for the museum’s upcoming exhibit, Sacred Spaces. This interactive session provides a unique opportunity for Annapolis community members to engage directly in the art-making process. ??? Saturday, October 12, 2024 | 10am - 4 pm ?? Banneker-Douglass Museum, 84 Franklin Street, Annapolis MD 21401 ? RSVP: https://lnkd.in/ehscK_db Participants will sort and cut materials, which Jefferson will later transform into a large-scale mixed media installation featured in the exhibit. The workshop aims to introduce the community to Jabari's mixed media techniques and to highlight the artistic potential of everyday, repurposed objects. Together, we will work on deconstructing and preparing materials for the final installation, giving participants a first-hand experience of how contemporary mixed media art is made. After each workshop, Jabari will take the deconstructed pieces back to his studio, where he will assemble them into a stunning large-scale installation inspired by the stained glass windows and motifs of Mount Moriah AME Church. The final artwork, incorporating found objects donated by Annapolis residents, will be a tribute to the rich heritage of the church and the Maryland Commission of African American History and Culture. Participants will walk away with a deeper understanding of how ordinary objects can be transformed into art, organized through principles like color, shape, texture, and line. Don't miss this opportunity to contribute to an evolving work of art that will be featured in our 2024 exhibition! ??: Photo of artist Jabari Jefferson, followed by the artists’ works.

The Compass Rose Theater (@compassroselivetheater) production of ‘Intimate Apparel’ and the talkback ‘Amplifying and Connecting Black Women's Stories’ was a spectacular experience. In celebration of the Banneker-Douglass-Tubman Museum's historic renaming, attendees were treated to a riveting production and an insightful post-play discussion. The play captured the audience from the first moment, immersing everyone in Esther's world set in 1905 New York City. The cast delivered stunning performances that brought the characters to life with depth and complexity. Esther’s journey as an unmarried African American woman during this time period was portrayed with such nuance by actress Danielle Curry, that you could truly feel her triumphs and heartbreaks. Adding to the experience, Annapolis High School members of the Black Student Union with advisor Ms. Tinesha McNeill, were able to attend as a part of our partnership. Their presence highlighted the importance of connecting the next generation to powerful narratives and exposing them to new arts experiences. Actor/author Chris Haley, alongside our very own Tahja Cropper, and the talented cast, offered invaluable insights into the artistic process behind Intimate Apparel and how it connects with the renaming of the museum during the talkback. The dialogue touched on the intersection of art and history, and the Black experience of today. A special thank you to Compass Rose Theater Executive Director Barbara Webber and the theater staff for this collaboration! #BannekerDouglassTubmanMuseum #AmplifyingBlackWomensStories #Drama #Play #LynnNottage
