Bank of the James was founded in 1999 as we watched many of our local banks being taken over by large corporate banks and institutions. We saw the level of service and quality of banking available to our community erode as decisions were being made in other states, and customer service was defined by an automated message at the other end of a 800 number. Two extremely talented artists are featured in the Academy’s Patricia Harrington Gallery this month! In the Up Front Gallery, you’ll encounter the cool hues of Laren Baum’s “The Other Side,” a collection of abstract acrylic paintings. Baum draws inspiration from landscapes, urban streets, and architectural details. She hopes that the colors and movement in her work communicate her own emotion and contemplation. In the Ann White Academy Gallery, Sandhi Schimmel Gold’s vibrant and textured “Paper Mosaic Fusion” showcases intricately crafted paper mosaics and other upcycled art.?Sandhi is the child of two Holocaust survivors, and her art features?personal mementos, souvenirs, cards, beads, buttons, toys, and more. Her “Treasure Tiles” – small assemblages made from such personal mementos – are a tribute to her heritage. The Patricia?Harrington Gallery is open Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–4:30 PM and Saturday, 11:00 AM–3:00 PM, and you can see these exhibits in person through August 1st.
