Factory farming is bad news for our climate, our health and animal welfare, so The World Bank Group should invest in kinder and healthier types of agriculture instead. Sustainable agriculture can treat animals humanely, slash greenhouse gas emissions and reduce pollution that’s damaging our health. the-world-bank has said this will generate $4.3 tillion, so it’s time to start funding sustainable farming, not factory farming. ??Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gvAjdSwc Global Forest Coalition Sinergia Animal Bank Information Center International Accountability Project Friends of the Earth U.S. Feedback Brighter Green Compassion in World Farming (USA)

Great report from UN Women on why better #socialprotection is vital to achieve gender equality. Where it's available, social protection has been transformative for women. But #LGBTIQ+ people tend to be overlooked or excluded in program design - despite the fact that they are among the poorest and most vulnerable groups in society. That's why we're working with Bank Information Center, Outright International and the Free to Be Me alliance to support LGBTIQ activists in demanding inclusion in social protection and employment creation programs funded by the World Bank and other donors. p.s. Thank you to Laura Turquet for gently correcting me on the extent to which the UN Women report helps to raise this issue.
Last week, we launched the 9th edition of the World Survey on the Role of Women in Development, which focuses on Harnessing #socialprotection for gender equality, resilience and transformation. Led by my colleague Silke Staab, this report shows that: ?? Social protection is a critical, but underused, lever for addressing women's poverty and exclusion, and could be key to getting the #SDGs back on track. ?? Policies like cash transfers, maternity leave, healthcare and pensions can prevent women from falling into poverty when normal life course events (having a baby, entering older age) or crises hit. ?? BUT, a staggering 2 billion women have no social protection coverage at all. Social protection is a complex and technical policy area, but this report breaks it down in an accessible way, making it a go-to resource for advocates and policy makers alike. Going far beyond the basics, the report also looks at areas like: ? delivery systems - how can we ensure that women claiming their social protection entitlements are treated with dignity and respect? ? digital social protection - how can we harness the opportunities, while mitigating the risks of excluding women without connectivity? ? financing - it's make or break for social protection provision, so how can countries, especially low-income countries mobilize the resources to invest in their people? Like raising children, these reports take a village! It was a huge collaborative effort both within UN Women and beyond, and we were especially fortunate to count on Naila Kabeer at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Tara Cookson at Ladysmith, Alexandra Barrantes, Vidya Diwakar at Institute of Development Studies, Corina Rodriguez Enriquez at Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) and Rebecca Holmes at ODI, among many others. BIC and Accountability Counsel welcome the introduction of Chairwoman Maxine Waters' and Congresswoman Joyce Beatty’s International Financial Institution Improvements Act of 2024. If passed, this legislation would have a significant impact on U.S. priorities at the international financial institutions, particularly around improving accountability and preventing sexual exploitation and assault (SEA).
