?? ?? Some of the UK’s biggest lenders are rapidly rolling back their climate pledges. Barclays and NatWest have decided to drop climate targets from annual bonus schemes for their senior executives, and Europe’s biggest bank, HSBC, has ditched its target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2030 because of slow change in the economy. ?? The decision from Barclays and NatWest supposedly reflects the companies’ long-term climate goals more accurately and includes cutting sustainability metrics as performance measures from annual award schemes, instead rolling climate targets into long-term share-based incentive schemes. ?? In addition to changing its net-zero target to 2050, HSBC also announced an internal review of targets on emissions linked to its loans. The bank’s sustainability chief claims this is to take a "more measured approach” to oil and gas lending, and to give the bank more flexibility in those industries. ?? Sadly, recent attempts by companies to dissolve baked-in ESG measures have been numerous. Incentivisation for climate and diversity targets has been a powerful trend in the corporate world, and its reversal is likely related to shifting political attitudes. The pressure is on for banks to comply, and as long as profits are more important than people, we can expect them to continue undoing progress without hesitation. ?????? #sustainablefinance #Barclays #NatWest #DEI #ESG #climatechange #climatecrisis #EarthOvershootDay
