Beadbeat featured article: Mycotoxin testing Streptavidin-coated magnetic beads and biotinylated single-stranded oligonucleotides were combined with a fluorescently labeled cDNA and an aptamer probe that detects the potent deoxynivalenol (DON) mycotoxin. In a food sample without this mycotoxin, the aqueous solution surrounding the beads does not fluoresce since the fluorescently labeled cDNA is complexed with the magnetic bead. If the mycotoxin is present, the aptamer probe preferentially binds the toxin, thus releasing the fluorescently labeled cDNA into the supernatant, which provides a signal of contamination.
