What will it take to ensure that climate finance reaches women on the forefront of climate action? This was the key question at last week’s inspiring #COP29 session “Enhancing Inclusive Climate Action: Alliance for Gender-Responsive Climate Finance”, hosted at the UAE Pavilion, with high-level panelists including Razan Al Mubarak, UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP28, Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland and former Chair of The Elders Foundation, and Dr Jemimah Njuki, Chief of the Economic Empowerment Section at UN Women. Our Executive Director, Kate Landon, was pleased to serve as a speaker providing perspective from the point of view of #philanthropy, calling for Foundations to leverage their funding flexibility to redefine whose leadership matters in implementation efforts. All agreed that bolder and more direct financing is needed, with key ideas emerging, including: - mainstreaming gender and climate in overseas development aid; - need for better disaggregated data within mapping of finance flows; - scaling up venture capital; - unlocking financing from multi-lateral streams to support existing community funds rooted in the Global South; - better supporting the robust participation of women from historically excluded communities to advocate in COP negotiations for their agendas. Thank you to the co-hosts: UN Climate Change High-Level Champions for COP28 and #COP29, in partnership with UNFCCC, UN Women, Roots Rising, and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). 关于我们
The Ban Ki-moon Foundation was launched in 2022 in New York City, with the goal of mobilizing stakeholders across sectors in the US and the Americas to advance progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement. A part of the Ban Ki-moon Centre Network, the Foundation has its affiliated offices in Vienna, Austria, in Seoul, South Korea, and in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The Foundation’s work in the Americas, in collaboration with global partners, will focus on addressing four timely issues: gender equity in all sectors; climate and sustainability; public health equity; and peace, security, and justice. Ban Ki-moon Foundation’s mission is to foster leadership for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Climate Agreement by inspiring current decision-makers and empowering the next generation of leaders. Our vision is to build a more sustainable world, based on universal respect for human rights, regardless of age, gender, identity, religion, and nationality through a global citizenship mindset. On International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, we acknowledge and commend the advocacy of fierce women leaders, as well as male allies, who persist in calling for the eradication of gender-based violence in all of its forms. Every woman and girl, in all their diversities, has the fundamental right to live free from violence. Yet we know that 1 in 3 of them will experience gender-based violence in their lifetimes - a staggering statistic that impedes the full participation of women and girls in civic life and as economic supporters for their families. On this day, we thank our Founder as well as allied organizations such as The Elders Foundation for their leadership on this important issue. We join them in reaffirming our commitment to a world where every woman and girl is free from violence and empowered to thrive in safety and dignity. Did you know that India is home to one-sixth of the world’s population and the largest youth population globally? The effectiveness of India’s progress on the SDGs is also estimated to determine the success or failure of nearly *half* of the global targets—an influence unmatched by any other country. Recently our Programs and Communications Officer, Sakshi Shrivastava, had the opportunity to attend two transformative conferences in NYC and Boston on the state of philanthropy and community development in India. These timely gatherings brought together hundreds of philanthropists, policy experts, and nonprofit leaders to deepen the conversation on India's future. Highlights included: - Expert panels on Driving SDGs Impact on Scale, Accelerating Progress Towards Gender Equity in India, and Youth-led Systemic Transformation. - Meeting extraordinary grassroots women leaders, especially Hechin Haokip and Manohari Doss, who are leading indigenous- and minority-focused initiatives in remote, socio-economically vulnerable regions. - Connecting with friends and partners including Karen Keating Ansara and Ina Jamuna Breuer from Network of Engaged International Donors, as well as Katrin Harvey and Celine Strufe from F20! Thank you to Dasra and Indiaspora for hosting these important conversations!

We know that the global response to the climate crisis has often fallen short - but what if people on the ground led the charge on climate policy? During the 2024 Climate Week, the Ban Ki-moon Foundation and People Powered brought together leaders from 20 global organizations - including private philanthropy, civil society organizations, and multi-lateral organizations - for an interactive forum on Climate Democracy to map the field and identify collective paths towards more effective, community-driven climate action. Key opportunities identified for continued field-building include: - Increasing citizen engagement in global finance architecture reform; - The need to increase financing in support of inter-organizational partnerships; - Ensuring that Indigenous stewardship, self-determination, and sovereignty are included in ongoing climate democracy efforts; and - Shifting norms so that current institutions and leaders increase their accountability toward communities in the Global South/Majority Read more insights from the Forum here: https://lnkd.in/ezPQ-C4n Thank you to all who participated! Earlier this week, the Ban Ki-moon Foundation was closed in honor of Indigenous Peoples' Day ?? In particular, we have been remembering a powerful community gathering we hosted last month as Indigenous leaders from across the globe gathered in New York for Climate Week, creating space to strengthen relationships and learn about the Foundation’s work to advance Indigenous leadership globally. This week and always, we recognize that Indigenous peoples, knowledge and leadership are key to creating a more sustainable, just and prosperous future. Thank you to all who attended!

#ClimateWeek 2024 was one for the record books! A true highlight was when Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens Co-chair and Ban Ki-moon Foundation Founder, Ban Ki-moon, endorsed the Fossil Fuel Nonproliferation Treaty at the Global Citizens NOW session on Wednesday, Sept 25th, emphasizing the treaty’s critical role in addressing the root causes of climate change. He called on world leaders to prioritize an immediate and equitable transition away from fossil fuels. Thank you to Global Citizen and our sister office Ban Ki-moon Centre for Global Citizens for your leadership on this important topic!
