Our Bamyan Foundation colleague and community member Zareen Taj is helping organize a series of workshops in January for #Hazara women to equip them with critical digital literacy & storytelling skills to voice their unique narratives and stories. Hazara women face higher risks and vulnerability in Afghanistan due to the intersectional factors of gender, race and religion. While all Afghans go through an incredibly difficult time in Afghanistan today, the unique narratives of Hazara women must not be subsumed with the broader and mainstream stories from Afghanistan. Please consider supporting this crucial initiative. Donations will be matched 50% by GlobalGiving while matching funds remain. https://goto.gg/f/53392

Promoting & providing support to at-risk populations in Afghanistan in Education, Gender Equity & Community development
关于我们
Bamyan Foundation is a registered non-profit and non-partisan section 501(c)(3) organization located in Washington DC. We are dedicated to promoting and providing support in the following key areas: 1). Education and Humanitarian Aid Initiatives in the marginalized and persecuted Hazara communities in Afghanistan; 2). Community Development efforts to support the Hazara diaspora and the new evacuees in the United States; 3) Hazara refugees scattered around the world; and 4) Our priority is to support women and girls in said three key areas. Hazaras are one of the main ethnic/racial groups in Afghanistan, who are under increased risk of genocide in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, according to United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, Genocide Watch and Forum-Asia. Bamyan Foundation partners with reliable grassroots leaders and community-led organizations that have demonstrated a sound track record of service and low overhead to create long term collective impact in the marginalized and underserved Hazara communities in Afghanistan; the Hazara diaspora communities in the United States; and in the Hazara refugee communities around the world. Our grassroots partner-organizations are meeting a crucial, locally identified need in their respective host countries, and Bamyan Foundation will support their efforts. We believe that continued assistance supporting programs in the above key areas will have a significant and lasting impact on social and economic mobility of the Hazaras, and will support their survival and resilience in this difficult time. Our approach helps keep the overhead low as we do not have travel and accommodation costs due to a spirit of volunteerism and service coupled with an accountable and transparent system that we have established with our partners. This ensures that every dollar raised goes towards our projects and those who are most in need.

When Dr. Habiba Sarabi became the first female governor of Bamyan, I was a schoolgirl. We organized a special program to welcome her, and I gave a speech on behalf of our schoolgirls, requesting facilities and books, as the lack of resources was a challenge. Years later, I was honored to share a panel with her. Her leadership continues to inspire me. We need this legacy to continue. Afghan girls deserve the right to work, freedom, and equality. It’s their fundamental right, and we must ensure their voices are not silenced.

The Shia Hazara community in Afghanistan has historically faced systematic violence on the grounds of their ethnic and religious identity. Under Taliban rule, targeted attacks and hate speech against Hazaras have continued unabated. Watch Bismellah Alizada's report highlights at KabulNow here:

Congratulations to our former student Nila Ibrahimi, who was awarded the International Children’s Peace Prize recently! Nila has been a vocal advocate for Afghan women and girls, and has founded HerStory along with her brother Murtaza to provide a voice for other girls from Afghanistan. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters and creativity of our educators and community leaders on the ground, Bamyan Foundation continues to make education accessible for girls in Afghanistan. Even after Taliban's ban, we were among the first organizations to find a way to provide quality education for girls through our underground schools and especially designed programs. Nila winning the prestigious award and singing her powerful protest song "Boro bakhair ba maktab" #gotoschool, at the award ceremony brings an enormous amount of joy and meaning to our work at the Foundation. #education https://lnkd.in/g8WqbV6p

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking with students and researchers at Harvard University about the human rights situation in Afghanistan, focusing on the Hazara genocide and gender apartheid. Many thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Swindle and the brilliant participants for an engaging discussion. My remarks were based, in part, on my recent publications on this topic:?? Revealed: the truth behind the Taliban’s brutal Kabul ‘regeneration’ programme
“The investigation, a collaboration between the Guardian, the Centre for Information Resilience’s Afghan Witness project, Lighthouse Reports and the Afghan news outlets Zan Times and Etilaat Roz also uncovered signs that the destruction is in part linked to ethnicity. The satellite analysis, carried out by Afghan Witness, showed that of the six most-affected districts – where at least 50,000 sq metres (12 acres) of residential properties were demolished – three were areas populated by the minority Hazara community and two were populated by the minority Tajiks.”

Commander of Afghanistan's First Female Tactical Platoon to Advocate for Afghan Women’s Rights: Meet Mahnaz Akbari Thanks to Mahnaz' efforts, Bamyan Foundation is making education accessible for girls via our underground schools in the persecuted and marginalized Hazara communities in Afghanistan.
This Veterans Month, we honor Mahnaz Akbari, former commander of Afghanistan’s first Female Tactical Platoon (FTP), who led over 2,000 missions with Afghan and U.S. special forces. Breaking barriers, Akbari’s team brought vital cultural sensitivity to military operations, challenging traditional norms and proving the essential role of women in defense. Now in the U.S., Akbari is a tireless advocate for Afghan women, supporting former FTP members and refugees through NXTMISSION INC and Sisters of Service. Additionally, through her work with the Bamyan Foundation, Akbari supports education for Afghan women barred from school by the Taliban, helping fund underground schools and offering aid to Hazara victims of targeted attacks. Read on to learn more about Mahnaz Akbari's journey.
