Whether it’s something you use in the field or a term you’ve overheard, let’s crowdsource the evolving language of the skies. The skies may be the same, but the lingo is changing. Fighter pilots have long had their colorful jargon – "bogeys" for unidentified aircraft, "Fox Three" for firing a missile, and "punching out" when ejecting from their jets. But today’s drone pilots are adding their own flavor to the language of the air. Here are some examples of drone pilot slang making waves: "Stick Time": Hours spent on the controls, much like fighter pilots log their cockpit time. "Deadstick": A loss of power, leading to a crash – the drone equivalent of a fighter’s "flameout." "Sky Sniper": A highly precise drone operator. "Flyaway": When a drone loses control and veers off course. "Deadzone": The unresponsive range of a joystick or control input, where fine movements don't register – a frustration for precision pilots. "BLOS": Beyond Line of Sight missions, highlighting the remote nature of operations. Now compare this to classic fighter pilot slang: "Bingo Fuel": Low on fuel (or for drones, low on battery). "Check Six": Watch your back—drone operators might say "360 Scan." "Winchester": Out of weapons, or for drone ops, "Empty Payload."
