Introducing Rosa (brown) and Soleada (yellow). They were two ducklings that a sympathetic woman on the peninsula found in a cardboard box on her front porch a couple weeks ago. She reached out to @center_valley_animal_rescue who referred her to us. Gwen and I walked on to the Port Townsend ferry to meet her and pick them up. Like all ducklings, they are adorable, curious, loud, and stinky! The yellow one is much bigger than the brown one and is a little bow-legged. We brought them into the clinic for Dr. Sandi to take a look and she called out two possible causes. 1) ducklings need a lot of niacin, a B vitamin, in order to grow right and unless they were given the right amount of duckling specific feed, they probably didn't get it. 2) ducklings need to swim! Like not just to learn but if they don't swim while they are growing their legs actually don't grow right. She said it's likely these ducklings were underfed and maybe had enough water to drink but never enough to swim in.
