A core idea of the Virginia Commonwealth University’s STEM Building was to achieve a sustainable design while balancing a tight urban site with a large, high-intensity program. VCU committed to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. In collaboration with Quinn Evans, The STEM Building is one of 23 LEED certified buildings that help the university work toward its ambitious goal. Extensive coordination with the users and safety officer allowed lab equipment and its layout to be designed to reduce energy and enhance safety. In January, Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker unveiled the first phase of the City of Philadelphia Riverview Wellness Village, a pioneering facility for Philadelphians in recovery from substance use disorder. Ballinger is proud to lead the programming, planning, architecture, and engineering for this project, providing treatment as well as workforce development and other services. Here's how Mayor Parker described the project at a recent event: "We officially opened the doors to Riverview Wellness Village, in Northeast Philadelphia. Riverview is a cornerstone of our new Wellness Ecosystem through which we'll support many more people to achieve recovery and stabilization with permanent, affordable, and dignified housing. A Wellness Ecosystem that gives people a place to go to be treated for substance abuse, mental and behavioral health, and homelessness, and a judicial system that handles individuals with empathy – we are changing how the City of Philadelphia treats these seemingly intractable problems.
