To me, Northeast Tennessee has been more than a place on a map or a news story - it’s home. Recently, however, our region has been devastated by severe floods, and it’s heartbreaking to see the impact. In 1977, the Nolichucky River flooded the region with a “100 year flood.” This weekend, we saw the Nolichucky River flow at 1.3m gallons per hour - double the mark in 1977. The impact was swift forcing 50+ people to the roof of a hospital, only to be rescued by air. Neighbors cutoff from rescue due to complete infrastructure washout. But the spirit of the region was front and center as friends, utilizing their helicopters, UTVs, and ATVs, reached the unreachable. The challenges we continue to face are daunting - lack of clean air water, disrupted cell service, and power outages continue to plague the region. But the resolve is mighty. To our team at Ballad Health, thank you. Rallying together to ensure that care continues uninterrupted. Finding creative ways to deliver food, water and supplies. This team has, and will continue to, go above and beyond to reach patients and provide vital services. Amidst the chaos, stories of neighbors helping neighbors have emerged, offering a beacon of hope. From sharing resources to providing shelters, the compassion and solidarity of the #AppalachianHighlands knows no bounds. As we navigate these challenging times, I am confident we will rebuild and recover - stronger than ever. On Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom, honor the resilience of African American people, and reflect on what it means to live in communities that prioritize individual rights, freedom of speech and equality. While we celebrate American independence on the Fourth of July, it's important to remember that the Declaration of Independence did not ensure freedom for all Americans. Specifically, millions of Black Americans remained enslaved for nearly another century. The Emancipation Proclamation, effective in 1863, marked a significant milestone, but true freedom came later on June 19, 1865, when Union troops arrived in Texas to free the last enslaved people. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. This year, we celebrate its fourth anniversary as a recognized federal holiday. As we work towards fostering a community where diversity is embraced, we are proud to recognize Juneteenth as a pivotal moment in the pursuit of liberty for all. #balladhealth #Juneteenth
