GrowerTalks may be the best-known greenhouse trade publication in the world. While it’s published in America’s Midwest, just outside of Chicago, its reach and influence is global, with its editors historically on the road and in the air to find the stories, trends and news. From the days of George J. Ball and his sons traveling across the country by train or abroad by boat, to today’s editors visiting trade shows and greenhouses on nearly every continent, GrowerTalks is there, in the greenhouse and garden center, bringing you the latest growing and retailing information. In 1997, we decided to launch a publication just for retailers. There were two major information gaps in the market that we felt prepared to fill: crop information and consumer trend information. No other publication was bringing timely, accurate flower and plant information to retailers. Yet we’d been doing it for growers for years. And no one was focusing on the end consumer and what she wants and needs. We launched Green Profit to serve those two niches, and it has done that admirably for 11 years.

GrowerTalks magazine editor Chris Beytes and Snoopy the #Drone were on hand for the start of the 2024 caladium tuber harvest at Classic Caladiums in Zolfo Springs, Florida. It was late October, and only the second time in 24 years they harvested this early. Why? A great growing season that had the tubers almost TOO large. After being crated, they go to the warehouse for two weeks of "curing" to toughen them for winter storage and shipping out to growers around the world. Some 95% of the world's caladiums come from Central Florida. Check out GrowerTalks editor Jennifer Zurko's first-ever attempt at harvesting cuttings! Here's what she had to say about it ... Me trying to harvest my own cutting at Ball FloraPlant's farm Yecaflora. It went terribly as you can expect and it definitely takes an expert eye and lots of skill to do it. Not to mention you have to be careful not to cut your fingers! (GM of Yecaflora Erinque Aragón took the video with Production Manager Edgar Velasquez looking on. Eracelda Rodriguez was the very patient lady trying to help me out.) #greenhouse #horticulture #harvesting #cuttings #growertalks #greenprofit #insidegrower #ballpublishing

We want to call your attention to an article in this month’s GrowerTalks that details findings from a study by Roberto Lopez and Charlie Smith at Michigan State University. https://lnkd.in/g3yyEgVD EXCERPT: Knowing that geranium cuttings can often show yellowing after sticking (due to stress in shipping, storage or elsewhere in the chain), Roberto and Charlie conducted research to determine if a single overhead spray application of a tank mix of BA+GA4+7 and a rooting hormone on geranium cuttings with different flower colors would prevent leaf yellowing and not delay rooting or cause a phytotoxicity. Not to spoil the ending, but they found that regardless of the cultivar, the cuttings with the greenest leaves and the fewest senesced leaves four weeks after stick were those that received a 2.5 ppm spray application of BA+GA4+7. Roberto and Charlie trialed multiple tank mixes (including adding rooting hormones) in this study and share their results using clear tables and trial photos. Check it out before heading into geranium propagation season and as the researchers say, “don’t stress!” #greenhouse #horticulture #geranium #propagation #growertalks #ballpublishing

NEW TECH ON DEMAND PODCAST—EPISODE 145: Oil-Based Pesticide Solutions ft. Emily from Kemin Industries https://lnkd.in/gd9XpVWd The latest Tech On Demand podcast, brought to you by GrowerTalks is now available, detailing a cutting-edge approach to insect and disease control—the use of botanical oil-based pesticides within IPM programs. Host Bill Calkins is joined by the director of research and development with the crop technologies division at Kemin Crop Technologies, Emily Fuerst. The conversation begins with some history on Kemin Industries, a family-owned company operating since the 1960s producing science-based ingredients found in the food we eat and supplements we use, as well as nutrition for healthy livestock, poultry, aquaculture and more. Since about 2018, Kemin has been focusing a lot on our segment, bringing innovative solutions to the greenhouse and nursery markets. As Emily and Bill move into the topic of oil-based #biopesticides, you’ll learn why essential oils have the potential to keep pests and diseases under control while minimizing the use of standard chemical pesticides in an IPM program, all supported by scientific trials and success stories. Research and application show these products not only prevent or control greenhouse pests and disease to the same or greater levels compared to conventional chemistries but can be much safer for workers with low to no REI. It's truly a fun and informative conversation and you’ll want to listen all the way to the end! Be sure to subscribe to the Tech On Demand podcast on your favorite app so you never miss an episode.
