Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 37 million Americans, with Black, Hispanic, and Native American communities facing the highest risks. But here’s the key takeaway: race isn’t the reason—it’s inequity. ?? The numbers tell a story: Black Americans make up 12% of the U.S. population, but 35% of kidney failure cases. 1 in 4 Hispanic/Latino and American Indian/Alaska Native adults lacked health insurance in 2021. Diabetes and high blood pressure, the two biggest CKD risk factors, disproportionately impact communities of color due to social determinants of health (SDoH). So, what does this mean for health equity? ?? Health equality means everyone gets the same resources—but not everyone needs the same support. Health equity ensures communities get what they need based on their unique circumstances. How can we drive change? ? Increase awareness—many people don’t even realize they’re at risk. ? Improve access to early testing—simple urine and blood tests can detect CKD early. ? Advocate for policy changes—the expiration of Medicaid expansions could leave 17 million uninsured by mid-2024. This National Kidney Month, let’s talk about solutions, not just statistics. ?? For decades, multiple sclerosis (MS) was considered a disease that mostly affected white people. This belief wasn’t just inaccurate—it was shaped by research gaps that left communities of color overlooked. ?? Recent studies now confirm that Black and white adults in the U.S. develop MS at similar rates—yet Black Americans have a 47% increased risk of developing MS compared to white Americans, and the highest mortality rate among people under 55. Hispanic individuals may be at lower risk of MS, but when diagnosed, they face faster disease progression—a pattern also seen in Black patients. The real issue? Medical research has long neglected racial diversity. Out of 60,000 scientific articles on MS, only 113 focused on Black patients and 23 on Latinx patients. That’s less than 1% of total studies. Without diverse data, treatment approaches remain one-size-fits-all—leaving millions at a disadvantage. As we recognize MS Education and Awareness Month, it’s time for a shift. Equitable healthcare starts with inclusive research, better access to specialists, and a commitment to addressing health disparities. ?? February is National Cancer Prevention Month, a time to focus on how we can take proactive steps to protect our health and address the inequities that contribute to higher cancer risks in Black communities. While cancer affects everyone, Black Americans face unique challenges. Social determinants of health—like limited access to nutritious food, preventive screenings, and quality care—widen the gap in outcomes. But many cancer risks are preventable with education, advocacy, and action. Here are 3 impactful ways to reduce cancer risk: ?? Nourish Your Body: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can lower cancer risk. Combine this with regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight and promote overall wellness. ?? Quit Smoking: Tobacco use is linked to multiple cancers. By quitting, you cut your cancer risk significantly and protect your loved ones from secondhand smoke. ?? Get Screened: Early detection saves lives. Routine screenings for cancers like breast, cervical, and colorectal are essential for catching potential issues early. Health equity begins with awareness and access. Together, we can empower ourselves and our communities to make choices that reduce cancer risks and close the gaps in care. Take action today.
