Seaweed Plastic + Protein?... Coming soon! ?? I'm thrilled to announce Umaro Foods new collaboration with Sway, a leader in using seaweed polymers to make biodegradable, flexible film plastics. ? With the right chemistry, seaweed has enormous potential to solve two problems at once: the need for sustainable materials and the need for sustainable proteins. ? Until now, no commercial process could generate both of these products from the same piece of seaweed. ? Making plastic + protein from the same regenerative starting material is a major unlock for getting to super competitive unit economics for both products. ? Made possible by a grant from the Department of Energy's $20m MACRO program, advancing seaweed tech as a solution to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. Good news from Berkeley City Council -- tax exemption for grant-funded R&D in the public interest. Also reduces their City of Berkeley business license fees. Meaningful for early-stage startups indeed.
Last week, Berkeley City Council unanimously voted to approve Mayor Jesse Arreguin's recommendation to update Berkeley Municipal Code Section 9.04.165 to exempt the taxation of business gross receipts relating to philanthropic and government research and development (R&D) grants in the public interest. Councilmembers Humbert (District 8) and Tregub (District 4) co-sponsored the item. The update will be meaningful for early-stage startups as they file for their annual business license renewals, as renewal fees are calculated based on annual gross receipts. The waiver opportunity will also allow the full value of government and philanthropic R&D grants to be used to develop climate solutions, healthcare treatments and other technologies to address the world's greatest environmental and social challenges.
