Imposter Syndrome & Choices We Make

When challenged by Imposter Syndrome, our choices and decisions are made from a place of fear.

That means from a place of a dysregulated nervous system.

And that means they are not really the choices we would make if we felt connected and truly confident in ourselves.

And this is a problem because...

the choices and decisions we make today create our future.


Every decision has a consequence based on that decision.

Every action has a reaction, one way or another.

If I am making decisions from the place of “I am not good enough” and “I am not worthy,” I am creating a future that will reconfirm that belief.

And round and round we go.

A never-ending cycle that won’t stop until we wake up to the fact that the only way to start creating different outcomes in our lives is to first create a different relationship with ourselves.

The external will ONLY change when we change the internal. 100% of the time.

We don’t like to hear this because we expect the external to change so that we can feel better.

Unfortunately, that’s not how things roll.


You could be working with a coach forever. Literally forever.

If you’re only working on your actions and trying to change your behaviour without addressing the root cause of your behaviour, nothing will change.

You might change things for a hot minute, and then boom – you will go back to your default of making decisions from the place of fear and the belief of “I am not good enough.”


At work.

In your business.

In your intimate relationships.

In your friendships.

Everywhere.


The only way out of Imposter Syndrome is by taking radical responsibility for our internal world.

Understanding what is going on in our psyche is not enough.

Having all the information on how to change things is not enough.

Reading about how to change things is not enough.

Listening to podcast after podcast on how to change things is not enough.

Talking about how to change things is not enough.

None of the above will change anything.

ONLY changing things will change things.


Radical responsibility.

Otherwise, you will keep making decisions and choices from the place of fear of not being good enough over and over.

And a few weeks, months, or years from now, we will feel the consequences of those decisions.


At work.

In our business.

In our intimate relationships.

In our friendships.

Everywhere.


How much pain and internal struggle do we need to wake up to the fact that all the power to change things is inside of us?

It took me almost 40 years.

And then it clicked...

It’s ME who can change how I feel about myself and the world at large.

Not my boss or husband or friend or anyone else. No one. Only me.

So why wouldn’t I create a relationship in which I become my own best friend?

Duh...


It’s a constant minute-by-minute practice of asking myself whether the choices I am making today are coming from a place of really wanting to make those choices or from a place of fearing that I am not good enough and from the need of being approved and liked.

A minute-by-minute conscious check-in.

And sometimes I do make a decision because I want to be approved of.

But I am choosing to do so consciously.

I know that the choice I am making will have a consequence.

One way or another.

I know that the choices and decisions I am making today create my future.

It ’s a really simple principle, actually.

Not always easy to execute though...

It takes guts.

Please take my advice on this – don’t do it alone.

Hire a coach.

A coach that will get you.

A coach you will feel comfortable with.

A coach that will challenge you and hold you lovingly at the same time.

A coach who has the knowledge but, most importantly, has lived through the challenges of Imposter Syndrome, has the tools and a process to guide you through.

I might be your coach. I don’t know.

We never know until we connect and feel each other’s energy.

It needs to flow both ways because we do deep work together.

You ’re literally transforming your life.

And because I work with business leaders and business owners – your transformation directly influences your team.

It needs commitment.

Absolutely, Michaela! Imposter syndrome can be a decision-making kryptonite. Fear-based choices often hold us back from pursuing our true potential.

Fantastic content which will resonate with so many people Michaela. I particularly like the concept of “radical responsibility” which seems to align with what a few other say too. It reminds me of Jocko Willink’s “Extreme Ownership” I truly believe that you are the solution to so many people’s challenges in today’s workplace.
