Celebrating the new Welcome Pole on the Seattle Waterfront, again by Suquamish carver Randi Purser and a complement to the new Welcome Pole on Bainbridge Island's STO Trail: https://lnkd.in/gxXeMGGS
What an incredible day on the Seattle waterfront on Saturday! This weekend, Suquamish Tribe carver Randi Purser’s stunning companion pole to the Bainbridge Island Welcome Pole was officially dedicated at the Park Promenade. Thank you to Waterfront Seattle and the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture for hosting a powerful celebration of public art and Indigenous history. A crowd gathered to meet the talented artists and learn the stories behind this meaningful installation. The new public artwork, designed by Oscar Tuazon, features beautiful carvings by Randi Purser (Suquamish Tribe), Tyson Simmons, and Keith Stevenson (Muckleshoot Indian Tribe). Spanning Columbia St. to Spring St., it honors the longhouse traditions of the Salish Sea and invites us all to envision a future shaped by Indigenous knowledge and creativity. Randi Purser’s Seattle Waterfront pole beautifully complements the 14-foot cedar Welcome Pole on Bainbridge Island. Together, they honor Chief Seattle’s lineage, his Suquamish father (Schweabe) (on Bainbridge Island), and his Duwamish mother (Scholitza) cradling Chief Seattle (in Seattle), at a very pivotal moment in history. Explore the art on the Seattle Waterfront: https://lnkd.in/gXwHGdr2. We hope you can see it in person. It is a very short walk from the Seattle Ferry Terminal!

Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Rec District admin offices have new (more precisely: newly repurposed) digs at Strawberry Hill! The building came with last year's acquisition of the former Comcast property on High School Road that added 8 acres to Strawberry Hill Park -- funded by a $1.1M grant from the Parks & Trails Foundation. Welcoming Bainbridge Island's newest park, 8 Acre Woods! We're thrilled to announce that the gift of a wooded parcel near Rolling Bay is creating a new 8-acre neighborhood park. To be known as 8 Acre Woods, the park property has been gifted by a conservation-minded donor to the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District via the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation. An open house and dedication will be held at the park at 2 p.m. Dec. 12. 8 Acre Woods is located at the corner of Manitou Beach Drive and Mountain View Road at Skiff Point. It shares a property? line with the Fieldstone of Bainbridge, a?senior living center. The property owner is a longtime supporter of the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation and was aware of the organization’s effort to bring opportunities to the areas of the Island underserved by parks and trails. Informal walking trails on the property will be improved, and other passive-park amenities like benches and a kiosk will be added in the future. The Park District will conduct habitat restoration to weed out ivy and other invasives from the firs and broadleaf trees that cover the property. “It’s a lovely property, offering nearby access for a quiet walk in the woods and connection with nature,” Meier said. “The owner has allowed neighbors to enjoy the property for years, and this generous gift will make it a park in perpetuity.” From Dan Hamlin, Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District executive director: “This marks the third community donation to our Park District in recent years, showcasing the incredible philanthropy of our Island. “It reflects the spirit of our residents, who are committed to sharing their resources for the greater good. Our partnership with the Parks & Trails Foundation has made this collective spirit possible.” The Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation has secured over 30 acres of new public parkland over the past decade. Most recently, the Foundation helped double the size of Strawberry Hill Park to 39 acres by purchasing two neighboring parcels.
